2 Questions

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

#1. Do I take the lower leaves off of these plants? The are destined to go out into the ground someday. Hopefully in the near future.

#2. Is there any bug on the planet that does not eat brugs? These are the buggiest plants I have seen since I tried to raise brussels sprouts. Yikes!!

Thanks.

Avid works great for spider mites and Merit ( Imidacloprid) works for aphids. I don't ever get any other bugs on mine, inside or outside. In fact, since using the above, I only have to spray every couple of months.

Just wait until the end of summer and you will see just how big they can get in one season. Whoppers!! They look good now and I'm sure they will survive most bug attacks with help. In Iowa we have problems with caterpillars, mites, and cucumber beetles. I've never noticed anything else working on them

Hey Frogs, are they Dr. Seuss and Whiskers by chance?
Those seem to be my bug magnets :(

What's in AVID? I don't recognize the name. It is a chemical probably sold under another name here?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Avid is sold here. I found it online. Very expensive, but only using 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water makes it go a long ways.

echoes, after the beginning of the season when I plant the bruggies with composted manure and bone meal, I fertilize them once a month with a rose fertilizer that contains a systemic insecticide. It keeps the bugs off, but it's definitely not something that should ever be used with food crops.

Thanks everyone. It loks like another bad bug year here. I do not know why drought conditions would bring out the bugs!!

Those two are double whites and probably the least buggy of the bunch.

Just want to know what chemical Avid is. I have one systemic here, oxydemeton-methyl 5%, carbaryl 5%, dicofol 2%.

I have my first seedling out of six seeds, only one. Supposedly candida. Also a potted one on order for later this spring.

Avid is abamectin.

Was just going to go back and edit. Found it. Can probably get it at an agri business.

I am fighting aphids really bad here.. keep bathing my plants, but they are really stressed now and hardly have leaves, they are coming back, but I keep finding those darned aphids. The seedlings are growing and are bigger than the cuttings now. This must be the year for bugs..

Order yourself some Merit from Rosemania. You just need to water with it, within 3 weeks your aphids will be gone. Water every month or so, and you won't have any more ahpids. It's the only thing that worked for me the winter before last. I had a terrible problem. Not any more. Good luck.

Can anyone describe the difference (in detail, if possible) between a Dr. Suess brug and Chas Grimaldi. Looking at the pictures, I can't see any difference. I have one blooming now (not sure which). Thanks!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Jeanne, the Bayer Tree and Shrub Insect Control is the same active ingredient as Merit, imidacloprid. HD and Lowes sells it. I love it! Only one that ever got rid of scale on my oleanders and it has killed aphids in just a day for me! No spraying, just water it in. One application works up to a year in the plant. I wonder if there is any difference between the 2?

Abbethel, I have only Charles Grimaldi, but as I understand it, Dr. Seuss has leaves that are serrated and CG has smooth edged ones except on new sprouts. Other than that, I do not know. My CG flowers continuously. It was the only brug that flowered all winter! Sparsely, but did have a few. In the summer it is profuse in it flowering!

beautiful picture, kell. My Charles Grimaldi cutting didn't make it, darn!

I think CG is the "child" of DS and Frosty Pink. I have a CG that has not yet bloomed for me and DS was my first to bloom last year.

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Kell for your input re CG and Dr. Suess. Its too late tonight to check but I'll look in the morning. One of the plants is blooming now so maybe it's CG. It has bloomed off and on all winter in the GH. Does anyone know if the flowers look different?

Kell,
What do you have underplanted in that picture?
Thanks,
Arlene
