please, think about:
it is wintertime. In wintertime many brugs have brown or dark spots.because it is dark and cold and brugs are sleeping:-)
Not each dark spot is dangerous. Also curled leaves and bad growth....not an illness but wintersignes.
Only some brugs can become really ill, mostly some yellows and oranges.
Last weeks I talked with many european brugnuts and breeders: Most brugs are healthy and I believe same with your brugs.
Sometimes a rose or a daffodil will become ill in your yard.....
you will notice it and???
Sorry, all I want to say: Slow down...:-) 998 from 1000 brugs are healthy.....believe me, please.
Please do not get a panic
You may be right, but these pics are not of nice healthy, clean looking brugs.

No one is in a panic that I can see. Thanks to Monika, we are all becoming educated on how to handle this outbreak in the best way. As they say Praemonitus, praemunitus and even knowledge is the antidote to fear applies.
I think that what Ludger is trying to say is that we can continue to grow healthy brugs even with Strangelbrand now appearing in the USA. It is not a reason for panic, but instead a reenforcement that we would all be wise to get in the habit of using good sanitation practices and of inspecting our brugs regularly and isolating potential problems.
edited to ask: How is your mom doing, Ludger?

Remember that old saying "only the strong survive"? Nature has a way of ridding itself of things that don't belong...maybe these yellow multihybrids have been genetically stretched too thin... just a thought, my mind is rambling on tonight LOL
What kind of ducks are those Ludger? I've never seen such tall upright muscular looking ducks. Can they fly?
Thanks for the voice of sanity Ludger. If we get a virus we throw it out.Same thing with SB.Check often and throw out the offenders.I go a step further and throw out anything I don't recognize.Plants can be replaced.
thanks Ludger, I agree, there's no need to panic. when I posted pics on BGI asking about a few of my cuttings I sure didn't think it would end up like this! It's good that we can share more pictures and info so we know what to look for, and what to do if we find it on our plants. I'd hate to see anyone destroy a healthy plant if they don't need to.
They look like Indian Runners to me,I could tell you a story, but you would not believe me!LOL!I still don't believe it!
We will get through this thing, I hope,as family, not every brother, gets along with every sister,or every sister, gets along with every brother, but as family we will survive........

"voice of sanity"????? I think what has been posted here the past few days has given us much needed information, and answers that others couldnt answer. The questions have been 100% answered by Monika. No one was insane, or even close. We are worried, and just want to put a stop to it.
Even tho its "wintertime" my lilac bush (for instance) does NOT have brown spots, or areas where a fungus is eating away at it, or even any ill looking branches. Like Gloria said, the ones that have been posted ARE sick!
I have said it before, and I will say it until I am blue in the face, I refuse to lose a valuable upcoming collection, to some odd looking brug, whether it be SB or not, its being burned.
"Slow down" are NOT the words I would have chosen. Can you imagine if we would "slow down" on cancer (systemic)research, or AIDS (systemic) research?? Stragelbrand is systemic also, right?? We have to find out about it.
All just MHO! But Monika has been here, talking us through this. Until other brug "nuts" can prove to me that they know more than her, I will continue to follow Monika's advice.

Brilliant, Ludger. I agree there has been far too much panic over what may or may not even be the feared Stangebrand on some of the plants in question. Thank you for your good words. The renewed focus on avoiding the transmission of SB is important, as is frequent observation of plants which may need to be culled. Yours is the voice of reason! Much like the daylily rust scare, we need to learn how to handle whatever pests threaten the enjoyment of our Brugmansias!
I'm not panicing. I will keep a better watch for problem. So far i have never had any problems with my brugs.
I am watching and looking mine over from top to Bottom and so far so good. I am relaxing and not worrying myself into a tizzy but I am still looking and keeping things in order.
I have lost a couple of cuttings but not to SB. Just plain ole didn't make it.....they can be replaced and no harm done....and I had more than one of each.
I think we are all coming through this better educated and now know what to look for. I am so grateful we can all pull together in this, and that we can support one another. I belive in the end we will all be the better for it...
Dee
Yes Dee!! Too bad brugs came in from Europe thru the back door. But we will learn all we can and figure out how to live with this. I sure hope this is a lesson to us all, painful as it is!!

I just want to know what kind of ducks? Indian Runners- you think root?
Ludger, my DD was looking at this post with me and said she wants your ducks or at least one. Shes 14 and has been wanting one for a couple of years now, but she really really likes your ducks. So like datdog we are wondering what kind of ducks those are. LOL
Oh and thanks for the heads up on winter brugs.
Ludger, long time no see, I hope you and your mom are well. Do you remember when you said to me "It's only a plant".... so true.
i have had stangelbrand, at least i think that's what it was. it's just like tomatoes that get wilt. happened to a seedling.
life has gone on and i still have many many many brugs...
and i had no one to blame for it!! the conditions were just right for the stuff already in the environment to grow.
if all my brugs die, i will add more old garden roses! they take less fertilizer anyway....
Can anyone tell me if this disease can spread to wheat, or citrus or anything besides brugs??
No Shelley.
A fair question, Shelly. I don't believe the actual disease has even been named/identified properly, yet. Whether it could spread could be better addressed once we know exactly what we are dealing with.
fusarium i think. if it is in the earth and conditions are right it will attack and kill plants that are susceptible.
So, it can be found in soil anywhere, and certain plants are susceptible, such as yellow multi-hybrid brugmansias?
gone2seed, I dont think I'd post one more word, if someone was going to jump on me like that... that was mean....
I mailed you something today...

Lexy
ps
this is not even CLOSE to being as terrible as human cancer... what a terrible thing to compare this too.....

Lexy
If fusarium is already in the earth and only certain susceptible plants acquire the disease, how does that explain the allegation that it was brought to this country from Europe by infected plants? Some of these discussions are ceasing to make sense to me. Maybe its just me...
Edited to change "accusation" to "allegation"

Gretchen, I think I'm starting to agree. My Ag agent saw this, although she says she'll look into it further.
Maybe Mother Nature is just trying to tell us not to be so greedy (too many to take care of properly!) and to take better precautions!
Lexy, I am ALL too familiar with cancer, the only thing I was comparing it (cancer) to was that it was systemic, like SB thats all. And as far as jumping on JT, I wasnt, Im sorry that you took it that way. ALL IMHO learning all we can is what is sane. I was just suprized JT said that is all.
This is a very unfortunate thing that has happened, and I'm sorry for all of you who have lost your beautiful plants. I hope I can keep mine healthy because I don't think I'll be acquiring additional ones anytime soon. Some of the other threads on this subject have become downright ugly. Someone (maybe it was Mavie Rose) in an earlier post said that life is too short to worry about plants. Really, life is too short to worry about anything. Its so sad that this natural occurrence has caused such bitterness and strife. I don't believe that anyone intentionally sent out infected cuttings. Brug lovers should rejoice in the fact that this was discovered and brought to light before entire collections everywhere were lost! IMO get rid of any bad plants, practice safe handling technics and move on. Chock this up to a learning experience, albeit an expensive one for many, but move on. Is it worth all this? Is it worth ruining relationships with friends made here over this? Like I said, life is too short.....May you all be blessed with healthy plants! :)
Edited to delete the statement regarding this being a Christian website. Sorry if I offended anyone, for some reason I thought SCIF had a fish next to the logo when I first joined............................................. Guess it was a very blond moment :-O

Thanks for the kind words Lexy but that doesn't bother me. I have looked at the pictures, learned a lot from Monika and Ludger and will apply what I have learned.End of story. You are so right, this in no way compares with human cancer. Brugs are easy to replace.
It has also been said here that this came in on illegal brugs from Europe. Horse manure. A lot of brugs came in legally before the current enmbargo was in place. I have ordered from Hodnik's, legally, in the past and so have many others. My guess is that this stuff has been here all along. We see it now as we all become more knowledgable. Very few diseases have only ONE host plant. Nuff said!

Also , remember, sangs are virus carriers too.....
and we are all not in a panic about that......
Shelly lambie pie, pay me no mind.....I just dont want ANYONE's feelings to be hurt, ANYONE, yours mine anyones.. and that looked like it was hurtful ... I dont have a clue about this stuff, none of it.... I wish I could say its really important to me, but its not.... and Im not saying that "meanie".. I just mean, if you have good health, a job, and a happy home, then this is just so un-important in the scheme of things...
I hope ya'll get it figuered out and I hope everyone has healthy plants...
but if this was a thread on losing a friend, then I'd be a lot more serious in my posting ...
hugz to all
Lexy

You know I am only going to say this and I am going to be gone My subscription is running out and I am not going to renew. When those of you and I really don't know who I am talking about but if you are mad then it's you, who excepted cuttings from someone who was generous enough to give them to you did indeed give them to you you were not pouting then, and now that this thing has attacked our plants you want to huff at the person that gave it to you like it is their fault. Things happen plants get things every bodies thumb isn't green if all my plants die fine but I am not going to find someone to blame i'll just get another!!This site has gotten here lately with alot of new folks which brought on plant and cutting swaping for newbies myself being one of them and now all this bickering is a result of it. it is now a place I do not want to be. I hate arguing!! so Dave if you read this please cancel my subscription and to everyone who has been so kind as to give me plants I love yall and I will cherish them always.
I edited this post becaus it was not worded like i meant, i have taken a few days to think about this, and I am like IHUGHES i like alot of aspects of this site, and I have decide to just stay off the brug forum for awhile, and check out the other good forums that i like till all this bickering subsides. I apprecate so much all the cuttings I have received weather they fall pray to this diease or not Take care and GOD BLESS, I feel like i fell pray to being a finger pointer myself withh the way i worded this post I don't want to be that kind of person I love all of you, hope i am forgiven.

springsong, you are the kind of person we need here at Dave's to help keep things in perspective! It is so true, there is no blame to be placed, pests and disease are all part of growing plants. Likely that susceptible or weakened plants will succumb to problems that others don't, not anyone's fault. Hope you will decide to stay!
John
big hugs amanda :(
I enjoy spending time here at Dave's, I have learned much about brugs and many other plants. I enjoy the co-ops and seed trading. However, I don't like the finger pointing and blame. I am glad that my brug collection is young and small, and I have only sent one cutting ever to another member and it was from my own Dr. Seuss that grew well and bloomed several times for me last summer (my first brug year). I have quite a few small plants and cuttings from generous members (you know who you are) and look forward to their blooms this summer. I have given them all a good inspection and all look healthy, and they will be as happy to get out of the gh as I will. Come on spring . . .
