Malanga is in short supply around here.
What does it go for down there?

Ric

Homestead, FL(Zone 10b)

Malanga is usually .69-.99 a pound unless it's on sale.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I bought mine at an Oriental Market in Des Moines and they were 25 cents each and about twice the size of an egg. Sprouting like crazy now, so I'm hoping I'll have some great ears from them. I would guess that the cost would be about the same.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Well now I've definitely got to search around here for a market
handling them!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Ric,

try Asian or Latino stores ... they do carry them all the time... that is if there are some in ur area. there are plenty in Los Angeles, but not in my area :(.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

They sometimes have them at my Walmart Supercenter....

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Ric, there used to be a store over in Oakley called Thai-Am and they had all sorts of things. I am going to have to look and see if they still exist. The Mama over there loved me and used to make me the best soups and foods when I worked at the salon next door. She gave me great deals on jade jewelry too. :) I am trying to think of other Asian markets as well.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Hmmm..... Chele I'll try Jungle Jims.
They may well be the place.

I'll check w/ some chefs I know maybe they can source it here.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

wow, 69 cents? I paid 2.48 a lb!!!!!!!!!

Homestead, FL(Zone 10b)

Wow tiG! I guess it's so inexpensive here because many South Floridians eat it and it's also grown here.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

it was that cheap here last year, I don't know why it's so high right now. and they are small too, not like last years. I was very disappointed, but maybe our new crop just hasn't come in yet.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Where are you getting yours tiG?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

super walmart

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

rootdoctor, thanks so much for taking the time to document this. It's great to see the steps that successful gardeners take and try to incorporate them into your own garden procedures. Just got a Xanthosoma and Colocasia this spring, so this is really helpful to me.

I guess Malanga are Xanthosoma? Is this right? If so, are they all edible or only the ones you get at the farmer's market?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Thank you! I am glad to help someone!
In my research, most Malanga is edible, and Colocasai,is what Poi is made from in Hawaii.
MaVie,Is the true expert on the edibility of almost all the tropicals, and she even has recipes!

I hope she sees this, because she can answer your question better then I can!

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

Ok, found this page about edible aroids:

http://www.kallus.com/aroids/ediblecuisine.htm

Seems like Malanga is cuban for most of the aroids they grow and eat there, with a second word to differentiate the types.

And this page about malanga:

http://www.innvista.com/health/foods/vegetables/malanga.htm

Now all I have to do is figure out if mine (Xanthosoma jeoquinii) is edible! I think maybe it is a mutant or sport from one of the other main species.

rootdoctor
do you happen to have the variegated one to trade? plmk and thanks
moretz

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Not now Moretz, the Xan Vari seems to pup easy,so maybe in the fall, and even then I can't promise it willl, but if it does, you will get one.

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

So far I've found that my species is also called Xanthosoma jacquinii.

This page describes it in a not very appealing manner.

http://bodd.cf.ac.uk/BotDermFolder/BotDermA/ARAC.html

The plant has acrid milky sap and a foetid odour. In Surinam, the small lateral tubers and the leaves are cooked and eaten. In the Andes of southern Colombia, the tubers are ground, boiled, and fermented to make chicha, an intoxicating drink (Morton 1972a).

That page also has toxicity and irritant properties for a number of other Aroids, just in case you were thinking of eating your Philodendrons...

;-)
