Well it sounds like a disease to me! LOL Hope you can find it. :)
Hi Donna,
I bought this vine last summer and I love it. It has already flowered in the late fall. It went dormant during these last few months, but I noticed yesterday lots of new growth coming on. I tried taking some cuttings in the fall, but they just died and I didn't see any seed from the flowers.
Do you think taking cuttings in the spring will work better? If I can get any started, I would be glad to send you a rooted cutting.
Donna....from the south. hehehe
Hi Donna from the south, :)
I really don't know about cuttings from this. It cannot hurt to try! and I would be forever grateful! If it works, let me know & I will try to tempt you will something, cutting or seed. (Thunbergia Grandifloras blue or white, or Jap. MG's perhaps) You southerners sure do have good access to tropicals! Lucky, Lucky! Thank you for the offer.
Donna....from the north. hehehe ;~)
Donna,
I have put this in my trade tracker for a future trade. As soon as the plant comes back to life, I will take some cuttings and try it again. Oh, would I love to be able to share this plant with others....it is beautiful. The leaves are big and they are pretty also.
Donna
Donna, I managed to get some of the hard woody cuttings to root in the fall. The soft wood just rotted.
Thank you Donna, I look forward to hearing from you,
And Poppysue, I thank you for the info. Your picture is the first I saw of this. Made my heart go pitter patter! LOL
Thanks
Donna
Thanks for the information Sue. I will try the hardwood cuttings.
Donna
Truth is, I was not all that pleased with the plant. The flowers are small comapared to the size of the vine. I only managed to get a few blooms at the end of the season and they were hidden behind the foilage. I wasn't going to bother planting it again but I did manage to get a couple of pieces rooted. I grew it in a pot last year so this year I'll try it in the ground and see if it does better.
The vine is huge. Even in a pot, it got 8 or 9 feet tall. I think it would have gotten bigger but I started triming it. I would think in the warm zones you might have to woory about it being invasive. At least it doesn't set seeds so won't have to worry about it re-seeding.
Poppysue,
I am bumping this up but also wanted to know where you had found yours & did you get it as a plant or grow from seeds?
Donna
Donna,
I got mine through Logees catalog.
I've been wanting to come back on Dg and ask what is happening to my vine.
When I posted in March to this thread, I had lots of new growth starting to appear on the vine, and then in the last 2 weeks, the new growth just shrived up and died. I cut into a portion of the vine and it seems to still be alive, but there is no green on the vine at all.
I sure hope something starts happening soon, or I don't know what to do. I can't take any cuttings until I know if it's going to survive.
Donna
Hi Southern Donna,
I am so sorry to hear that! Not just for myself, but for you too. I will renew my hunt for them then and if I am able to get one, I will start working on rooted cuttings for you, ok? Don't cry! :)
Northern Donna
I got my plant from Logee's too.
Donna, is yours in yours outside? Could it be too cold?... or maybe root rot? Mine has been in the house under lights. I cut it back because of spidermites but it has put out new growth since. It's not thriving but it's done okay.
Sue,
Mine has been outside all winter. It is planted in the ground next to my arbor. Since I live in zone 10, we don't get cold enough to have to worry about most plants overwintering. If it's root rot, can you tell me what to look for?
Donna
Well... yellow, wilting & shriveling leaves, even though the soil is moist, is a sign of root rot. Maybe the plant will leaf out again?? If the stems are still alive it might make it.
Sue,
There are no leaves at all on my vine right now. In the post above, I mentioned that it started to leaf out in March and then all of a sudden they died. I cut part of the branches and there was some green in the stems. OH MY, I just don't know what to think of this. I will keep and eye on it and hope it sprouts again soon.
Well guess what? My vine is dead!!!
Yesterday I was out digging up some plants for my trade and they were next to this vine. I just barely touched the base of the vine and it fell off it's crown. I dug into the dirt around it and the whole root system was gone. I'm still not sure what happened to it, but it looks like it might have been root rot.
Now I have to find another vine for the arbor that will climb fast. Sorry Donna, I won't be able to share my plant with you know. Did you ever find this plant for yourself?
Donna
Hi Donna,
I am so sorry to hear about your vine! If I have any luck finding one I will try to root some for you. I really appreciate the offer though, that was really kind of you. Good luck on your search for another vine for your arbor.
Donna
thanks Donna :-(
