That is the problem, Ma Vie, sadly none of us are. Monika is the only one that really has a good handle on this as far as brugs go. But my point was, once the cutting is infected with SB, there is no cure evidently. So no matter what you do when you get one that is infected, it won't help that cutting.
Stengelbrand, helpful hints on dealing with it!
MaVieRose,
I too got some cuttings from David and I know how horrible he must feel. Its bad enough to lose your plants to a desease and THAT feeling is magnified when you learn that you might be responsible for spreading. Poor Him. However, it seems that your cuttings were spared, so far, from the desease that David seems to have. So logic says that maybe our brugs can be spared if we take cutting from parts of the brug that does no show signs of the desease. What do you think? I'm an natural optomist but by no means an expert in anything. I'm just hoping for ways to control this thing. I have a few brugs which I received in trades. A couple I got from David, two of them died on me but at the time I didn't know about this desease. I have a few cuttings that looks funny and I'm trying to figure out if they are infected. BTW of the three that I think might have the problem only one is from David's brugs.
I am no expert but I have been payng close attention here and to Monika. It is my understanding that Monika said once the brug is affected, all of it is affected. It just will take time to show up. So be careful.
David sent off tons of cuttings from tons of brugs. I am sure hardly any of his brugs were affected since this is so new to us here. I bet most of his brugs and most of his cuttings were and are fine. He is not the only one that has had this come up in their collection. But because he was so generous in giving out so many cuttings his name has come up. I could be wrong, but I think David said none of the cuttings he sent out looked sick or had spots on them when he sent them.
It is also possible that once an infected cutting is in your collection others can catch it if they exchange bodily fluids in some way or if they are a yellow multihybrid that is so prone to it.
David also stated that he used bleach to clean his tools, maybe that why so many plants are coming up with SB. Just a thought. I used beach myself, not knowing that it wouldn't kill SB. Well I never heard of SB until last fall and didn't may much mind to it. Now I am going to learn everything that I can about this SB, I call it something else with the same initials.
LOL!
So how can we tell what is affected and what is not? Do we just have to wait until the desease surfaces?
When I get cuttings in I simply put them in a water glass til they bud out. Sometimes more than one cutting in glass, sometime more than one donor's cuttings in a glass. So you see, it if turns out I have this desease all my brugs might have it. This is scary. Almost like AIDS for humans.
See a close up of Hawaiian Double White...

I'm wondering if the cuttings were just taken too late in the season and therefore, developing a low resistence to any type of virus, therefore, making them more vulnerable. It seems that if it (SB) originated in a cold climate, maybe that is one of the variables here. Cuttings taken during certain seasons may just be the culprit.. Were most of the cuttings that have it were from really late fall cuttings?
PS. I'm no expert, just a thought, I am really new to brugs/cuttings too.

flowerjunkie, your cuttings have no SB, they have dried back, which is normal at that time of the year. The new Cotton Candy x Cherie Amour sprouts look healthy.
Whew! Thank You Monika. I was holding my breath and trying to remember who I sent what to. Its a such a big load taken off my shoulders. I'm ssoooooo happy.
Gourd,
Yes the cuttings were taken in late fall and one in early winter so it and they have been in a hot house that gets heat only on nights where the temperatures dip below 32.

MaVie: Thank you for posting the instructions on how to use the H202 and Tea Tree Oil! I am going to try it. Maybe it'll eliminate my fungus gnats... Gretchen
I could help with fungus gnats this year! I have so much more growing inside this year. The pool dunks work well but they do not dissolve so they are kind of messy.
I pulled everything single, solitary thing out of my greenhouse today. Chloroxed all surfaces, sprayed off plant leaves, and then put it all back. I'm sure there are just as many bugs now as before. I'm about to give up on the fungus gnats. It seems I get them under control for a while, then they're back again in full force. I guess tomorrow I'll spread a little DE and see if that'll do a little good...Kell, if you come up with anything better, please let us know :) Gretchen
