Is this a bud

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Get your magnifying glass out --- is this a bud? Its a Dr. Seuss cutting that was started on 1/1/04. Thanks for any input! Gretchen

I got my Mag glass out and I think I see more than one!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I thought so too, but I didn't want to be overly optimistic -- thanks Root!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Oh yes!! Lucky girl.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Didn't need the mag glass. Nice, right in the middle. Mine have been doing this all winter, and dropping off. Sure hope yours hang on.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Shoot,I need a Mag glass to post,I did too much welding in my life,my eyes are not what they should be.
I have had about 50% bud drop this winter, but since this is the first winter I have ever even had a bud,I am coping well.
Dang HG dropped the 2 it had,I was just about to get the common HG atitude, when I saw marys picture in the PDB today.

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Great looking buds you got there Gretchen!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Is it in your house or a GH? If it's in your house, try keeping the humidity up a bit...

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Thanks Moonlighting!

Woodspirit: Its in my GH and I mist really well twice daily. Wasn't sure if that was good or bad, but seeing how many of them have these little buds, I guess they're happy with what I'm doing...

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

gretchen which one is this ? i had buds big ones and the aphids did them in I am going to HAVE TO get me some AVID

Woodburn, OR(Zone 8a)

AWESOME!!! good job Gretchen!! aren't they so cute when they are teensy like that?

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Hey Amanda! Its a Dr. Seuss that I bought through ebay in January, and you can actually SEE the buds now! Today on all the cuttings, I removed the yucky winter foliage and the suckers. I want to make them into a tree shape rather than bushy. I noticed buds on several that I bought from her, but none on yours yet. Believe me, you will be the first to know! I haven't had any aphids (thank the Good Lord), but I am battling baby grasshoppers, fungus gnats, and now I think spider mites in my GH... Can't imagine where the grasshoppers came from. I hope I can last another 6 weeks before this stuff goes in the ground LOL! In the meantime, weather permitting tomorrow, I'm going to take them all out and spray them down...

Thanks Carena! Yes, I'm having fun with them and the 54 seedlings that are growing like weeds!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gretchen, I had baby grasshoppers in the house one year. I finally got smart and figured out that the adults had laid their eggs in one of the pots I brought into the livingroom window. Did that stop me from doing it again........nah!! Haven't had anymore grasshoppers, but I did have a tree frog in one of those self watering type planters.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Oh Shirley -- that's got to be where they came from...duh! I have quite a few plants in my GH that were on the porch last Summer. I re-potted most all of them yesterday with fresh potting soil. Too bad I didn't get it done before those little buggers hatched. They are wreaking havoc! How do I get rid of them without hurting all the baby plants?

What happened to the tree frog?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Probably the same thing that happened to your baby grasshoppers....no, I didn't kill it, I released it outside. I like the tree frogs and they don't damage plants, but they sure can keep a person up at night when the are talking between two walls of plastic.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

LOL, that's so funny -- I like them too. I do everything possible to encourage the frogs and lizards to live in my gardens. Your story reminds me of the night a katydid spent inside our house two summers ago. What a racket!

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

yes they can be loud. and they WILL eat your brugs, i made the ,istake of thinking they were okay and left one alone. it ate holes all in my leaves.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Oh, thanks for letting me know -- I figured they were a good bug since I thought they ate bugs! We didn't have any last summer, so maybe none this summer...

I want to see pictures of the buds. You must be thrilled.

Skat: I'll try to take some tomorrow. There are five on that one plant, which is a Dr. Seuss that I bought as a stick cutting in early January. They are larger than in that picture, but still pretty small :)

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

You're going to love Dr Seuss. It starts out light yellow and gets darker every day 'til it is deep orange. And the smell, like nothing I've ever smelled before. Make some pictures for us.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Okay...here it is with all five buds. I couldn't get at a good enough angle for you to be able to see them all...

It looks pretty small for 5 buds! The flowers will be bigger than the plant. Make sure you don't shock it when he goes outside. It'd be a shame for the buds to drop now. Give it some shelter from the wind when you are ready to take it out. I got terrible wind burn on some of mine last year.

It looks very healthy. You'll love the flowers!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I wondered about that, Sue. It is a small plant. Maybe it'll get a little more height on it before it actually blooms. Thank you for the windburn advice. I am planning to gradually introducing them to the garden for a few hours each day and increasing the time until they get to the point where they're out for a full day before transplanting them. It will be at least a month before that happens anyway, and I'm hoping it blooms by then :)

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

PS, I want to remove that big leaf... Its kind of yucky looking from when they got chilled one night... but I was afraid of hurting it and thus the buds. Any ideas on this?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

It's so much fun when those first buds start appearing. Can't wait to see the blooms they produce. Good going Gretchen!!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Thanks Shirley!!! I'm really looking forward to seeing and smelling my first bloom!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gretchen, 5 buds..GREAT!!! I always think even a yucky leave is good to manufacture energy to help the brug grow faster. I also feed mine alot through the leaves so I love big leaves to absorb more.

I am bringing out alot of my babies this weekend. It will be in the 70's. Wish me and them luck!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Kell -- thanks for the info, and good luck, but I hardly think you need it. You are blessed with "good brugs"...kind of like good genes.....

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks Gretchen! You are so kind. I think it is more the sunshine here than anything I do!

Though I do get great advice and ideas from here that I incorporate into my gardening habits.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I can't believe how fast they're growing!

Wow, it is going to be so cool looking at your place before long. Congrats Gretchen.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

really! Soon you will be giving us a flower show!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Yup...its pretty exciting. I hope I can keep them happy enough to not drop those buds... Y'all have a great day! Gretchen
