The Great Brug, huh? LOL! I have bat & seabird guano... I have really good kelp... I have 2 year old horse manure... I melted snow to water the brugs so as not to use chlorinated/watersoftenered water. Do you think the Great Brug saw all this and that's why I have 4 little buds?
HOW LONG FOR GERMINATION?
Yes ,you got it!
ohhh he love's bat guano
and when you do extra special stuff... melting snow.....wow
you'll be in bud heaven!!!
Karrie.. I get this sometimes also, I always figured it was from me watering too much. Maybe lighten up on the watering a little, and like brugie said "spray a little fungicide like physan and see if that won't stop it. Maybe some diluted hydrogen peroxide would do it too, not sure. One part to ten water."
Should I remove the dome? That is probably holding too much water in there. I have been bottom watering.
Karrie, generally when you plant the seeds and have a dome on them you won't have to water at all until they have sprouted. The seeds don't like to be wet, just moist. When I get the soil too moist, I take the cells out and place them on paper towels to wick up some of the water and then put them back. I'd do that and then leave the dome on them. If the soil starts looking a little dry on top just lightly spray it with water instead of watering from below. After they are germinated, you can water from below, but still, they don't like to be wet, just moist. JMHO.
oh boy... lol I dont know.. I tell you what I would do. I would remove the dome for a couple days (you decide when you feel the soil) Water it with the physan, or peroxide, still leaving the dome off, and then when the soil is acceptable to you, put the dome back on, and lighten up on the watering.
I havent ever tried brug seeds with a dome, so I dont know for sure Karrie, but I do know my other seeds I have started (petunia, columbine, etc) I dont water them but once a month after the initial watering and the dome goes on. Does that make sense? I hope it helps! Maybe one of the experts will come and let you know what to do. Like I said, thats just what I would try.

Ok - I just looked in my supplies and I don't have any physan. I do, however have some "Lilly Miller Microcop Fungicide" that says it is good on ornamental shrubs, vines and trees. The active ingredient is Basic Copper Sulfate. Do you think this would be ok????
Shelly: How do you start your brug seeds?
In rock wool now!!! LOL many trial and errors other ways. RW seems to be the best way for me.
I dont deal well with mold.. with RW, I dont have to worry about that near as much, I put them in a container, cover them with 'Press'n'Seal' by glad, or with a clear airtight cover. I do make sure the cover isnt closed completely tho. (I leave a very small area open so it will get a little air)
Karrie, I don't know to be honest with you. I believe someone said something some time ago about cinnamon sprinkled on the soil retarding fungicide and another household item was chamomile tea. Will have to see if I can find something from the past and bring it back up.
Well, I have just taken off the dome (and keeping it off) and sprayed it with a 10% peroxide solution and will hope for the best for now! :) I will try the chamomille tea in a week as that DOES ring a bell - definitely heard that before.
Shelly -- that's basically what I did. I thought when you said you didn't use a dome, that you didn't cover them... I have only lost one to mold. Hope its the only one!
I just moved mine, without the dome, upstairs into the sunroom of our bedroom - it has east, south & west windows (mostly south) and it is VERY warm in there right now as it is a very nice day here today! :) I'm hoping this will help dry them up a little.
lol sorry Gretchen! lol I supose I do use a dome then huh? My word! It didnt even register!! I sware!
Karrie you will do fine! I cant even tell you how many seedlings I have lost, and the amount of seeds that didnt sprout.
I went up and read how you started yours. I think I missed something or you did not say. Did you actually peel the corky coating off? I have noticed when they are not peeled, they will grow a white cotton type mold on them. I have done fine with pulling it off and using the peroxide mix. Once the seeds are sprouted, they don't need so much moisture.
I just nicked them with a metal nail file - I didn't peel anything off. So I should pull that white beard off then?
Well, I ran upstairs to go pull off the cotton looking beard, and behold it was gone - it was just roots now - so I gently pushed the roots back into the soil. The peroxide water that I sprayed on it yesterday must have done the trick!
Cool! I see the white furry stuff when I don't peel. I think it is just natures way of getting rid of the chaff. I'm glad it is gone. :)
I ended up moving my brugs down in the basement, next to the furnace, with a big double florescent just above them. They are doing much much better there. I know I will need to bring them up soon, for better lighting, but it really has helped. They are about 1 1/2 inches tall - looking like plants now. :)
