Buds, Blooms, & Signs of New Life

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Hi Delecie, couldn't help butting in with the reminder that after sitting on the back steps eating Mangos with the juice dripping off your elbows, getting the "strings" out of your teeth is part of the delicious experience. (LOL). A friend always brought me some of his little flat, green colored Jamaican Mangos. They have the best flavor and the most fiber of all! Of course I have never had a bad Mango, even the "turpentine" flavored ones have some redeeming characters.

Pati:

My son had his first mango when he was five or six. He began eating it and then started crying, "Get them out Mommy, get them out!" When I was able to get him to stop jumping up and down he said, "The strings Mommy, get the strings!" It was many years before he would eat another mango and it took a lot of convincing on my part before he would believe that not all mangos were full of fiber. LOL

The plants continue to grow and change. Yesterday I saw the first tiny mangos of the season.

Brugmansia Insignis was grown from a seed donated to Fairchild Tropical Garden by Dr. Preissel. This plant has bloomed almost continuously:

Brugmansia Aurea Hybrid was also grown from Dr. Preissel's donated seeds. This is the first time this plant has bloomed and I like the shape, size, and creamy color of the flower.

WOWOWOWOWOW!!!! The sight of those tiny Mangos had me drooling onto the keyboard, but the pix of the Scotch Bonnet dried it up quickly, LOL. Everything is BEAUTIFUL. My daughter, over in Bartow, said they have a nursery selling Mango trees that are hardy this far north. I don't know what variety they are, but I mean to have at least one!
KEEP POSTING!

Brugmansia 'Ecuador Pink' had been completely defoliated by the dreaded Tomato Hornworms. Thankfully she has recovered and now she has leaves and buds:

The Senna polyphylla is full of beautiful flowers. I was told that butterflies love this tree. Well, I guess those butterflies didn't get the memo because they never visit my tree. :(

Finally, the avocado tree is full of blooms, and also birds. Usually I worry about being hit in the head by a falling avocado. But these days, I worry about being hit in the head by an unwanted present from the birds. :)

I can only imagine how much you are anticipating having your own mango tree again. Please post a picture and the cultivar name when you get it.

how do you make your aloe bloom?!?! lol
our big huge aloe has thrown up several stalks over the years, but it has yet to actually bloom
:/

miss_kitty:

I was more surprised than anyone when they bloomed. I don't do anything other than ignore them. LOL Also, they are in containers that are too small for them... Hopefully some aloe experts will come along and give you some good answers. :)

Franklin, LA(Zone 9b)

well we've got this one big huge aloe that we've had for probably 15 years...lol
it's probably made several hundred babies over the years, and all of the aloes that sundry and i send out in trade are it's offspring
i just wish it would bloom
i mean.. it wouldnt be so bad if it never threw up a flower stalk.. but it does, and then it just dries up and falls off without blooming.. *EVERY* single time
it's such a tease! lol

I want one of those mangos.

Who is Dr. Preissel?

Homestead, FL(Zone 10b)

Dr. Hans-Georg Preissel is the head of Herrenhauser Gardens in Germany. He and his wife Ulrike have been involved in breeding Brugmansia and Datura for years. They are the authors of Brugmansia and Datura:
Angel 's Trumpets and Thorn Apples.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

delecie, wonderful pictures. i agree with Root, severe zone envy. It isn't snowing here but the wind is blowing so hard I am only going to work in the greenhouse. Wanted to plant poppy seeds but can't do that in a hard wind. Donna
