"Punxy Phil" saw his shadow. Six more weeks of Old Man Winter.
"T" :)
Groundhog Day
Wouldn't this have more to do with whether or not it's overcast or not? Also, why do they do it so early in the morning? This is a silly supposition...........
He can't get to the top of the snow to see if he has a shadow. Wev'e had about a foot of fluffy white stuff in last few days, still snowing. Wind has finally started to blow. We don't know how to act around here with no wind in a snowstorm. Should be all socked in by night. At least it's nice & warm now, +16º.
Sledder, we'll let you move here because it will be spring here by March 1.
Happy Winter!
Bernie
LOL We'd move north in a heartbeat. Thanks for the invitation. It's been cloudy in our area for over a week so when he saw his shadow everyone was surprised. I'm wondering if the shadow was from all the tv cameras? LOL
It's not only overcast, it's raining here today. A very good sign for an early spring. =)
Stuck in his hole? I never did like that groundhog, anyway. LOL
This whole silly thing is based on the age old tradition of Candlemas Day.
If Candlemas day be fair and bright,
Winter will have another flight
If Candlemas day be clouds and rain,
Winter is gone, and will not come again.
Hooray for clouds and rain!!! LOL!
Cheri'
We don't have a groundhog here in Kansas, but we have Jack rabbits, and jack didn't come out today, with 6 inches of fresh snow on the ground, while were on the subject any of you from up north missing any geese?Well there eating the green winter wheat all day and then fly over the parking lot to get to the pond and river, and drop thses huge green dive bombs on my white truck, and it freezes like it was painted on there.so would you mind calling them back home!
Much appreciated!
Thanks
well our general beauregaurd(spelling????) lee did not see his shadow and he has a 93% accuracy rating. going to be 68 tomorrow. and sunny. can't wait working oput tomorrow all day.
Glad you are taking such good care of them Tropicman ;)

well in the poll booth, i voted that i'm smarter than p. phil....maybe just have LOTS of wishful thinking??? i say spring is going to start mid feb for everyone all over the americas this year :)
question from a southerner...guess i didnt see that bill murray movie enough- but seeing his shadow = 6 more weeks of winter. what does not seeing his shadow = ?
ps, tropicman- i cant believe there are any geese there with you, i could swear every single one of them was here in lubbock!
sees his shaddow - 6 more weeks of winter - doesn't see his shadow, only a month and a half more of winter.
When they showed Dunkirk Dave on the Buffalo news, he was in the kitchen being handfed almonds. I think these silly beasts are too spoiled to even know they have a job to do. Rain and snow and sleet and then back to snow here today.
nature note - the first thing a woodchuck thinks about when he topples out of his hole is NOT whether he has a shadow, nor is it food. Three guesses on what he has on his mind.
Last year was a very mild, open winter here. Thousands of geese stayed on Lake Crystal about 10 miles east of us. They kept the lake from freezing over. This year, early snow covered their food sources & a few days below zero froze in the lake, they were gone!
These were Canadian Geese.
Bernie
Bernie... Canada Geese, not "Canadian Geese"??
We call them Canadian Geese here in Iowa too. It may not be right, but I'm sure every state has something that isn't pronounced right or even called by the right name. Canada probably doesn't care as long as we feed them in the winter months. LOL!! However....they can go home anytime now. When we see them flying north, we know that spring is just around the corner. It would be great to have a very early spring and to get rid of some of this crazy, cold, weather and snow.
Like Brugie is happy to see them go...we are sooo happy to see them come back! For a little while....until we find their gifts all over! :(
Canada Gooses, Canadian Geese, ***** Geese, who cares.
They have wreaked every swimming beach in southern MN.
Oh yes they summer over here. To lazy to fly to their namesake country. Or else they figured out lots of food here. They are death on new emerged soybeans.
Some goverment guys thought we didn't have enough geese a while back, now look at what we got.
Bernie
Same here jcf...NC has their own "little Phil" and ours said spring is right around the corner. I am sooooooo ready!
Hey art, whistle and see if more will fly down to Lubbock, had no Idea they flew that far south!
Hey lil,put out some feed and call them home!!!!
It will be a little while yet....really tired of them are you?
Well I'm afraid they gonna get me,while I walk to my truck,I hear them before I see them coming!!!!
If you can push the jet stream back up here we will be happy to have them :)
are a month and half and 6 weeks not the same amount of time?
sees his shadow - 6 more weeks of winter
doesn't see his shadow - spring is right around the corner
=)
Cheri'
Same amount of time - can't hurry spring.
Goose jerky is yummy! Send em my way. LOL
p.s. when those geese start to make a V-line North please post here.........they are *our* sign that this @%$#%$ winter is at an end. Thank you! ;)
There bellies to full of Kansas wheat to fly!
We call them now pot belly goose!!!!
quit feeding them!!! I really do love to see them flying back here and I am sooooooooooooo, soooooooo sick of winter and cold and.....
Start whispering in their ears that Saskatchewan's new crop will be growing soon! ;)

The temps just went down to 49 this morning. The fruits and veggies and the pansy's will love this cool spell. MY DH put his thermal underwear on to work outside today. (He's lived in So.Fla since he was 3, can't take the cold) I know, get out the tar and feathers, but I love yall's spirit and sense of humor. Ya keep me chuckling. Spring will be here soon.
Molly
My best source of amusement is coming from where my DH works. A number of fellows quit and the head office, stationed in Florida, has been sending people from across Canada and the United States to work in Saskatchewan. Now the fellows from Manitoba and Alberta are doing fine but the ones from Nashville, Georgia, Florida and Vancouver Island were looking a *wee* bit shellshocked when they found out what winter is like here...... I think they discovered what the words "hardy" and "cold" really mean.
Molly.....I keep telling myself...there are no dangerous snakes, spiders etc. here (over and over and over and over and over) .....and stir the tar pot a little harder! ;)
LOL Molly, I am helping stir that tar pot. We still have snow even though our neighboring towns have lost all theirs. My poor legs are tired of slipping and sliding outside.
Lilypon, my DH would work fine in your conditions. He has worked outside his whole life and doesn't know what it is to be truly warm in the winter. Keep stirring that pot. I am coming to help you with it.
LOL...I should say the fellows volunteered to come here, the company offered the chance and they took it. Local people are being trained. I was really worried about the Florida fellow....he had to drive to Saskatoon and a Province wide blizzard started about an hour before he would have got there.
eeekk I pray he made it safely.
Your DH would have done fine Ponditis and luckily so did the other fellow....managed to pull off the highway and sat it out.
Glad he is safe. I worry about the flatlanders in the snow storms of the north. I don't think they realize how bad it can get and how quickly it can go bad either.
Tropicman........THEY ARE BACK!!!!!!!!!!! :D A few Canada Geese were spotted 3 to 4 weeks ago but today, on our trip to Regina, we saw thousands!! :) Their V's were coming in waves...have you noticed them heading north from your area?
I sure have put not in those numbers, maybe 30 or 40 at one time.
There fat from eating all the green fresh wheat!!! LOL!
They'll be working it off soon enough...crops won't be showing up here for a while yet and I imagine some will be heading to the northern lakes. But they are here...temps today were 72F but we could get a minor snowfall or freezing rain tomorrow.... but it won't last! :D
Warmer they then here, were in the roller coaster mode.had a frost lastnite and expecting another one tonite,so I have to cover everything up and then remove it all before I go to work each morning.
