my first hoya- problem?

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

This is my first hoya, I got is at Lowe's about a month ago. It hasn't put on much growth if any, and the tip of the stem is looking funny. It looks as though it has little root nubbies on it. What are they??

Is there a reason its not putting on any growth, and new leaves? What can I do to encourage new growth?

oh, and the entire plant - which seems to be pretty healthy to me.

You pictures are a bit blurry but I believe what you mean are the little "root buds" that form on most Hoyas along the stems. These are completely normal and roots would form from these areas if a cutting is made or some Hoya species grow air roots from these places. I attached a pic of some pubicalyx 'pink silver' stems with these root nubbies.
H. compacta can be a very sluggish, slow and sporadic grower. It may take several month for newer cuttings to put on additional growth. Not much you can do about it, just keep well watered, warm and humid.
Good luck ;)

oh ok, your picture is much better than mine :), but that is what they look like. i guess they are air roots, since no cutting has been taken recently, nor is it a new cutting. it does seem like a sluggish plant...oh well, guess i will be patient. thanks for being a night owl! (or maybe not...i dont know what time zone you're in haha :))

My a_n_g what a big plant you have! I just got my first Hoyas a week ago but compared to yours they're only 'rootlings' in 2" pots. They only have 4 to 6 leaves but I can see that they are growing!

After looking at the pictures in this forum and on the Database, I get the feeling the I'll need more than one cutting in each pot (and many years) to even come close to the pictures?

I went to the garden shop at Lowe's today and was very disappointed ... the only things I found were frozen potting soil and a wooden tulip. I'm in the wrong zone :( and I can't wait for SPRING!!!!!!!

sveiks, i was so excited and impressed when i found this good sized plant at lowes! sometimes them and hd have great plants.

i know, i feel the same about the database...inferior!! we'll get there someday haha.

I cant wait for spring either!!! every day when i wake up, go downstairs and feel the chill i just feel sooo sad and antsy that its not here yet. it reminds me of -- when you watch a sad movie hundreds of times, and each time you think that the sad parts will change, even though you know it wont happen. i keep thinking....maaaaaybe spring will come in february this year.... :( MAYBE!!!! pleeeease!???

They put out these long bald vines, then they either get an umble, the start of a flower, then they get the leaves, some do it the other way around. I have been using a product called Eleanor's VF 11 I heard of this product from another forum. It is only in Calif. Are you able to get Super Thrive, if so put a few drops in a gal and water and mist your plants daily with it? It may work as well. You also may want to add extra light for the plants, they need light to grow. Norma

I went to Eleanor's VF11 website and got a "free" 8 oz bottle of VF11 for $3.00 postage. Good deal!
