Is this the way they should look.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

I am going to post a picture of one of the brugs I received last fall from Poppy sue.
My questions is should I be taking off the lower leaves?
Does is look the way it should?
I keep reading posts and the more I read the more confused I become.
This is Isabella and she always looks a little droopy and nothing I do seems to perk her up, my other ones have leaves that stick more straight out (I hope that makes sense)
Thanks for looking!

Perfect!Looks great to me,I would take the small lower shoots and root them.
But I am a Prune o Holic.

You will love Isabella.

Alice ,
.......She looks good to me. Different brugs have various leaf types ,fuzzy, smooth, wrinkly, some are different shapes also and have diff edges and ways they hang on the plant. I love the way some of mine go into the praying position after sundown.

That is a beautiful looking plant. You should see lots of blooms this summer. I would remove a few of those biggest leaves on the longer side stems. This will let more light get to plant. You could, as Root said, "cut off those little side shoots and root them".

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I don't think the side shoots are big enough to root yet, at least as successfully as bigger ones will root. I hear pros and cons about removing extra leaves. Some say that they need the leaves to take in the light, others say remove them to avoid as much trouble with mites. I say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I think your plant looks great.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

What a pretty plant!

Scoot: I was curious about the "praying position" of the leaves at night. My Candida's dont do it, but all the rest do. So that's normal?

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

Thank You Thank You and some more Thank You's!
I am so glad to know that she looks okay. Root thanks so much for sharing that photo, now I know what I have to look forward to.
The other 3 babies that poppysue was kind enough to share with me are doing equally as well, so it should be pretty exciting at my house this summer.
I can hardly wait!!!!
Thanks again, can't imagine what I would do without you.
Alice

Is that a "Y" on the taller side, or was this a cutting from the flowering region to begin with?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

This is a cutting above the Y to begin with.IMHO

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

and thats the best kind isnt it?

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

That's what it looked like to me too, root. But I'm no expert, still learning.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

The y's are all new growth these are from cuttings that poppysue sent me last October (I think)
I am probably going to have to raise the lights again today that they are under, I think they are getting a little to close.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Plays,I prefer below the Y cuttings, above the Y are more readily available,as people cut back in the fall.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

My preference is a strong cutting that has begun to change color from green to a look that appears that it is growing a bit of bark. Maybe a weathered look? I don't care about above the Y or below the Y when I'm getting free cuttings. I can always cut below the Y after I've grow a cutting for a year. I feel so fortunate to have known so many friends here that have shared with me over the years. I probably won't ask for a lot of cuttings, but I sure won't say it will never happen again. I have a couple I'm keeping my eye on. LOL!! Root is right...the top of the tree naturally will produce more cuttings.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

I thought above the y cuttings didn't grow as large (tall) but bloomed earlier; and the below the y cutting got taller, but took longer to bloom. Is this a dream I had or did I read this somewhere (Monika's book maybe, I don't remember)?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

It is true.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm sure some of the growth habit depends on the brug too. Pink Beauty is a whopper, no matter where the cutting comes from. Charles Grimaldi is also. I'm not big on having tall trunks with umbrella's of bloom on all of my brugs, so that means I'm not picky about where my cuttings come from. They are all pretty in their own way.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I agree,I would not trade my wierd little wallbrugs for anything,I was just saying that is what Monika book said,if my memory is right.

Edit to say, I don't think I have seen a Brug I did not like!

I'm NOT fussy,
I want 'em all
Short or bushy
Lean and tall
All so Lushly
Wall to wall
In my garden
I heard the call
HerrenhauserGarten
to Betty Marshall
Simple Sanguinea
Be still my heart
On a midnight raid
We will soon depart........

WTG Shirley. The talent just pops out in this forum.

** whispers** which is the fastest way to susie's new digs?? ?

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

No way that I know of Scoot, I think I will stop by way of Frannie's! I tip cuttings are best for earlier blooming, but they will throw a side shoot from the soil usually that will get nice and big.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

I agree, I like'em any way I can get'em.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

gingerlily
I will second that I wouldn't know the difference between an above y cutting or below, I was just really greatful when Poppysue was kind enough to share hers so generously!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I find that also Tracey. I like the top cutting to see the flower fast to see if it is worth keeping and if it is, it usually suckers a nice alley tree for me later on!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I did not think an above the Y cutting would produce a sucker, that would become an Alley, for lack of a better word.??
Will it???I thought it would keep the genetics from above the Y?
What is the answer? My book of Monikas is across the street.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Alice, sorry,I am not meaning to do a Hijack on your thread, this question has been bugging me.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

root
you can hijack my threads anytime!!! I learn more everyday and this is one of the ways I can learn to, so I really appreciate it. I never worry about which direction my posts go.
I think someday maybe I will even be able to make sense out of some of it.
The whole y thing is very confusing to me, but I can see why now!!!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks Sweetie,I'm the same way,I love when my threads roll off in a different direction, sometimes they get pretty funny.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gee Root, I am almost sure it does! LOL. I could be wrong. I am going back over my trees now trying to remember which were from top growth and which were from the bottom. And since I have no mind left I really can't recall. I get most of my alley type trees from suckers not seedlings (this will change this year I hope!!). Of course now that I am going around my yard in my mind I only have suckers on my already alley trees! LOL But I usually give away or toss the bush out once I get an alley tree so that may be why I can't place one right now! Like my Creamsickle. I have no memory how I grew a beautiful alley tree! LOL!! I planted all my cutting in my ground garden the first year and that is what started me getting my alley trees. I airlayerd them for potting up as aley trees. I got tons of alley trees from them.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I am going to keep track this year to see.
I have one cutting from DonnaB,Uconn T.it is Yed and looking like it is going to Bud!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Kell and Root and anyone who might be interested in keeping track of their gardening, I have a "journal" that I keep on excel. Its more user friendly for me than the one here -- no offense, Dave :) But I have it set up for my needs. The tough part is making myself do the entry work, but it has been worth it... Here is a preview, and this happens to be seeds. I have comments attached with "sticky" notes so they aren't taking up space on my screen unless I want them. In this case, where the seeds came from. Maybe it will be helpful to someone...

Can't quite read all the column headings, but I like that, Kaufmann! Think I may imitate it, too :)

I'm so glad to hear about the prayer position at night as my nightly routine was to check on the wintering brugs and the leaves of some were like this!

Root, what did you mean by an "alley"?

Great thread, aknapp!

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Root, I thought that was what Monika said in her book too; well I decided to get up and get the book. It does say that on page 4. Who knows, maybe Kell has found the exception to the rule.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Morph: Thanks -- glad you like it. My headings are:
# of seeds
Name of Plant
Date Sown
Due Date (of sprout)
Sprout Date
Notes
The nice thing about it is you can tailor it to suit your needs. I have my Trade Tracker attached to this at the bottom, and in the middle are the Brug cuttings and their progress. I really like the "sticky note" feature, which allows me to keep a minimal amount of stuff on my main screen. Gretchen
