Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I was talking with Brugie the other day,we were wondering about when to plant the bulb, she said hers had started to grow,I called AnnaZ,to ask advice,I had put mune in a shopvac filter box and tossed it in the back of the basement.
This is what I just found when I checked it,the box was closed to store it,LOL!

Wow, yours is much taller than mine. I've only got 2or 3 inches of growth. Someone tell me what to do.....

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I'm going into a pot with mine,I will put it in a sady spot down stairs.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

A sady spot or a shady spot. LOL!! I thought I read someplace that these can take sun outside. I've got to go look them up again and get this all straight in my head.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

LOL,Remember I have one swollen finger!!!
I put my Colo ears and ferns under my light table,so they have to reach for light.
I do not think this VooDoo is a sun plant,I am sure it will take full light,I am out of full light room,so if this guy wants to pop up in winter,he will have to do with a sady spot!LOL!

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

OOOOhhh Rooty, You do that Voodoo so well ;-D

Saucier, MS(Zone 8b)

I am zone 8B & mine would come
up & die back when I had them planted in the ground. I dug them up & potted them up in the
GH & they about to bloom again,
they bloomed this past July.

I think the flowers are so beautiful.

I've got 3 little baby bulbs someone sent me in a trade, I had forgotten about them they were planted in a small pot, in the garage/greenhouse. they are about l/2 in around, that's how small they are, two of them are sprouting, wondering if they will amount to anything?

Brugie, I think you better go stick yours in a shopvac filter box for awhile. ;)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Can't remember what kind of box mine are in, but they are packed with yesterday's news. Anyone heard of that? Froto sent me the bulbs and that is the wildest material. Looks like rabbit pellets made from compressed newspaper.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Look what I found: Amorphophallus riverii'
or Voodoo Lily
is a bizarre and unusual plant. It's native to the tropical regions of Asia and is a relative of our native Jack-in-the-Pulpit.

The voodoo lily flower emerges from the bare bulb in late February. It's dark purple and shaped like a huge calla lily. Bulbs need to be about 4-6" across (3-4 years old) to send up these blooms. The aroma is quite fierce because it's fly pollinated in the wild.
After flowering, (late March or April) the bulb can be planted in a pot for an early start. Within 4-8 weeks of planting the foliage stalk will start to grow into an umbrella-like canopy.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

That sounds like it to me,mine has put on some since coming out to the light.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I can't remember now if it was Arsenic or Evert or Kyle or maybe even someone else. They said they grow theirs in gravel or something, no soil. Those are such fantastic plants!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

All this talk made me run up and dig mine out of storage...good thing I did....,now what do I do with it?

Don, that is an amazing bloom. Your bulb must be getting huge. Does it throw pups too? Could make a real stinky place if it is. LOL!!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

OMG Karyn, what did you do to that thing?? LOL I like the idea of putting it in the kitchen. ;)

Um Don, I know you said YOU are harmless, but what the heck is to the right of that plant???

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I had my bulbs upstairs in a unheated bedroom...supossedly being dormant.....
it was in an empty bucket along with about 10 other smaller ones...no dirt.....I do see where some of the smaller ones look like they are about to start....

Should I pot it up?

Saucier, MS(Zone 8b)

Hey Don,

Why do mine (which look like yours) come up & die back (without blooming) in within weeks of sprouting?? But have bloomed 2 times this year in pots & are ready to bloom again in the GH. Mine came in a trade from Ca. She said her multiplied like crazy in her yard, so far mine have not.

I saw that,I really like the leaves on these,I am getting rady to pot mine up,I have been working on more lights this morning.keep me in mind too,if this ever goes nuts with babies!!!I like it!

Saucier, MS(Zone 8b)

Don,

Mine was getting morning sun when planted in the ground, I just water during dry spells. It was really weird, one day there would be a stalk with leaves that would be 10
or so inches tall, the next wilted & dying. A few weeks later the same thing, I just got tired of watching them die & potted them up. They did fine after that in the GH. I am zone 8B so I know it was warm enough.

Honeybee

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

we never pot em till after they bloom....when the flower withers then just barely cover the surface of the bulb and start watering....Oh! and root..it will SMELL like DEAD chickens when it blooms..maybe thats where the chicken thing came from!LOL LOL

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks Kyle, good to see you here!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Great to see you here Kyle. I'm glad to hear how you pot yours. I had read that they needed to be around six inches deep. I'll do it your way since I know you have had good luck. Thanks.

Selma, IA(Zone 5a)

You won't be able to stand to have it in the house on the first day it blooms. Maybe not even the second. when mine bloomed I had to take it outside. It stunk up the whole house. It was 45* out when mine bloomed. In the spring I just planted it outside. They have lots of babies by fall. I just dug mine and put them in a bucket put them under the bench and forgot about them till close to spring. I didn't let them see light or warmth or mmoisture till It was warm enough to put them outside when they bloom. They have strange tropical foliage . One fall I just didn't dig them. I keep thinking I will get another one some day. There kind of fun to have.
