Hi Everyone,
I have been reading some old post about Blue Silk Morning Glories.
Are these a type of Mount Fugi Morning Glory, or something entirely different.
Do the "Silk" Morning Glories come in different colors, with the blue being the rareist?
I've been trying to find out more on the internet, but can't seem to find much.
Is there a retail source for these?
I'd love your opinions on a large flowering Morning Glory that I could grow, or any opinions about your favorites.
I want to grow some in my garden, but also would like to start some for my sister as a surprise .... she loves vines.
Thanks for any help,
Blue Silk Morning Glories
blue silk is like the chocalate morning glories but blue color.
unfortunatly you have to take your chances on ebay for them as no one sells them any more. they go for a lot of money on there
the silk glories only come in to colors rose and blue.
we all have been trying to find these and some have seeds but there is no guarentee on if the germinate or not.
i am still looking for some sa others are too. good luck and hope this helps. Marie
Tree,
The rose/chocolate silks are easy to find, the blue silks, on the other hand, are not. There was quite a mad hunt for them over the summer which is probably what you read.
A couple of weeks ago,in the member stores, Karchesky Canna was selling the blue silks, roman candy & double sunrise serenade for $3 a pack! I don't know if the seller has anymore, (myself & OhioBreezy may have cleaned her out! LOL)but worth watching the stores for them.
If you have never checked out the member stores, try it. The link is on the right hand side under HOME, FAQ, SEARCH...
Good luck! And keep your fingers crossed that I have a bumper crop of seeds in the fall to share. :~)
Forgot to add a link that shows several varieties as well as good info.

PudgyMudpies,
My fingers are crossed.
Thanks for the information.
LOL, that was fast! I posted & then popped back to edit to add that link & your reply was already there! LOL
Thannks for the link Pudgy, I'm getting an education.
you and ohiobreezy did clean her out. so she wont have any luck there as alot of the rest of us didnt get none either because they were already gone. i called her and she has no more.
so the hunt for them is still on which alot of us are having no luck as to getting any. so good luck to you
tree climber.
Pudgy,
The pressure is on you now to get a bumper crop of seeds for all of us to grow in 2005. You did say you'd share ;-)
Good Luck,
Hi all, I did get 2 packs of the Blue silk, I am hoping they do well for myself and my sister whom I purchased the second pack for. My sister does NOT grow vines, so I will have to plant them, and baby them, and harvest them from her place LOL, if she only knew how pretty these were, I will have to smack her so she doesn't snip them to put in a vase!!!
They were going very high on auction, I tried but just couldn't go that high, and at 3 bucks a packet from Karchesky Canna, it was a steal!! I of course, will share next season too. I am happy to have gotten the ones I did get.
Laurrie
Yes Tree, I will share with you! Did you look at the site I sent you the link to? Did you drool??? LOL
There was a co-op for the Japanese MG's & I was lucky enough to get in it. So if you remember to email me in the fall, I should REALLY be able to outfit you with a "plethora" of seeds! LOL (my sons new favorite word. LOL)
Oh, you know what! I just realized that I have a baggie full of mixed that you can have! It is from my crop last summer. It has blue silk, rose silk, mt fujis, tie dyes, and more. Duh. I totally forgot about them! Email me for my address and you can send me a SASE and that will get you started for this year until fall for the others.
Donna
Imzadi,
good luck with your hunt. Try that link I posted above, she might have them for sale. I can't remember but I know she is offering several.
Ohio,
Why don't you just give her a pack if heavenly blues and grow both packs yourself! LOL
Ha ha Pudgy, I could do that huh? Honestly she knows nothing about morning glories, I could give her "wild bindweed" and she would think they were pretty, I just thought since where she is at, with no morning glories, a better chance of having some good seeds without the chance of any cross pollination, I know, they are self pollinating, BUT one never does know totally for sure, so thought I would play it safe!

Blue silk sounds beautiful, I love the rose silk, got some in a trade recently, and I bid on some blue picotee and rose picotee morning glory on ebay, I see the blue often but not the rose. they are both beautiful,
kathy_ann
holy cow! just saw some on ebay, their up to 20.00 for 10 seeds, un real! they are beauties though.
kathy_ann
I hope that they will make a comeback with so many people getting what little seed there is available. This is a beautiful MG.
You guys kind of answered this question, but not in detail so I'll ask it:
Do Morning Glories cross? Slight chance or good chance? Is there a safe distance for planting different varieties without them crossing?
I was going to research this on the internet, but you all seem to be the experts.
I know there is no 100% guarantee of pure seed if you grow different varieties of anything, but am I limited to only one variety of Morning Glory if I want to collect seed?
Pudge,
I did check out that link you posted, and yes there was a bit of sighing, if not actual drooling at this end. I use to be a snob about Morning Glories .... thinking they were just too common, but I had no idea what beautiful varieties there are. I'm ashamed to admit that I've had a prejudice about a lot of things I thought too common until I did some research ...... marigolds, zinnias, ....
I'll email you about that baggie you have stashed away...
I have a new Park's catalog and they have a chocolate silk
MG.
Yes, they do cross. I think I read someplace that there should be 50 ft. between them to be relatively sure they don't cross. Not a guarantee even at that distance. I suppose like other plants, you could prematurely open the flower, pollinate, and then cover it so nothing else could get in. Might be worth a try on some of the more special ones.
Oh, how beautiful! I've never seen one in person. I have a new mantra - Blue Silk! Blue Silk! Blue Silk! lol Ebay, here I come.
Seedsower,
Breath-taking! And the seeds you sent me never germinated! I probably rotted them. Will try again this year!
Oh my gosh, they are just beautiful. I hope someone will get them growing and that they will produce tons of seed that can be shared. Absolutely gorgeous!!
Seedsower,
Beautiful picture.
It looks like there will be a lot members at Dave's Garden looking for these seeds, but it also looks like quit a few people are growning them this year. Hopefully their popularity will increase their availablilty soon...
If we could get everything we want easily, it would take some of the fun out of it don't you think .....
Kathy,
your SASE arrived today & I will get it back out tomorrow. I see a bunch of new listings on ebay today for the Blue silk Morning Glories so you might want to go do a search there if your still looking.
Donna
Hi, does the rose silk morning glory really get 4 or 5 inches across? I am bought some off Ebay and was wondering.
I am new to MGs. I would love some of the blue picottees if anyone has a few left.
Teresa in KY
depends on the soil fertilizer and conditions they are in. now i live near a major nursery. their flowers are always so much bigger then mine. its just the way you raise them. they can get big and pretty. i think though the bigger they get the more frail. just my opinion.
Beautiful picture Sandy.
Anyone want to comment on MG's being invasive? My sister thinks I'm crazy to even want to plant one variety, let alone more.
Tree Climber.....because you live in zone 5 you shouldn't have a problem with them reseeding. I have been growing many varieties for many years, and the only one that has repeatedly reseeded is Milky Way. You might want to stay away from that one! Try the Japanese varieties (Rose Silk, Sunrise, Mt. Fuji, etc) if you're worried...they usually don't produce ripe seed before the 1st frost hits.
Happy Growing!
Sandy
Thanks Sandy for the reassurance.
That's a beautiful picture, what variety is that one?
This one is Mt. Fuji, one of the Japanese types.
Sandy
Hi Tree,
I think your area may be too cold for them to become invasive, but I am just guessing.
But really, if you DO decide that you don't want them anymore, which I find almost impossible to comprehend, LOL, just spray any volunteer sprouts with a shot of roundup & that is the end of that.
And that beauty that Sandy posted a pic of is in that bag of mix I sent you, there are mix colors of Mt Fujis, Tie dyes, Heavenly blue, Rose silk, blue silk and more.
I don't know if your familiar with the Plant database here at Daves, but if not, here is a link to all the morning glories that will help you put a face to the names.
http://plantsdatabase.com/search.php?search_text=morning+glory
And I bet once your sister gets a look at your morning glories in full bloom, she will be asking for her own seeds! ;~)
Oh, I almost forgot! Look at last years Morning Glory contest.

Donna
Donna,
I haven't changed my mind (but thanks for the heads up on the round up).
I'm looking forward to growing the seeds you sent me and seeing all the surprises!
And you're right ..... I can hear her now "can I have some of those seeds?"
For what it is worth, I had Grandpa Ott's, year before last and last summer I had a mat of seedlings around the area where the vine was located and out in every direction for quite a ways. I think whether they can be invasive or not must depend on the kind of glory it is.
I am hoping the hybrids are not like the native MGs here in KY. They are quite invasive in the garden!
I am still looking for a couple of the blue picottee MG seeds.
I can trade a few datura seeds for them.
Teresa
Teresa, I just bought a pack of the blue picotee MG's last weekend. I'll be glad to spilt it with you - - the picture on the packet looks like this http://plantsdatabase.com/showpicture/21623/
Oh, thanks
If you could just send a few seeds. It will help on my gardening budget. I had seen them at Rural King for about two bucks. I will save you some more daylilies or hosta.
Teresa
Hi Everyone.
I managed to get hold of some "Blue Silk" & "Flying Saucer" Morning Glory seeds - Placed them in my propagator for a bit and hey presto! loads of little seedlings - I moved the seedlings to their own pots, placed them in a warm position, but not in direct sunlight inside the house and all was well - but over the past week or so 80% the seedlings seem to be withering and dying - anyone have any ideas?
cheers
Daniel ;-)
PS - I'm a newbie gardener!
Daniel,
sounds like Damping off.

A really informative article.
Morning glories hate to be transplanted!!! That must be the problem. Each time I've tried to transplant any they normally die or come close to it. I've always had the best luck when I direct sow.
