I'm gonna try this one more time, if I get disconnected I will scream!!!! This red brug was listed in the van Bourgondien catalogue I got the other day. $16.95. Is this the one that is a bugger to get to grow and bloom? Is it worth my time, money, and effort to buy this one?
red brug
I just received that catalog too. Its gorgeous, but from what I've turned up in my research, it needs to be in a cool, high altitude climate...
Yes Gretchen, it is a sang. They love it where I live and Jeanne and Liz. They hate it hot. A beautiful pic! You can get seeds of this one much cheaper on ebay. And they are self fertile so will grow up to be like Ma if not crossed.
I knew how to spell beautiful, I really did!

no fakin this one I guess? lol tis pretty tho pretty pretty pretty....
I am hesitant on buying ANYTHING on e-bay, am afraid I'm gonna get rooked. You know, the old "bait and switch", etc.
Anna: I had always felt the same way as you, very afraid of e-bay, but I wanted brugs so badly that I bit the bullet and took the plunge. I was very fortunate to end up with some nice cuttings. It seems as though gardeners are overall an honest bunch of people. I thought you were buying it from the catalog. Evidently you found a good deal from someone on e-bay? Check the dealers rating. Should help you decide... Good luck. Gretchen
Anna ,My 2¢'s worth,
About Sanguinea......

Anna_z: I think the "difficult one" you've read about might be the 'Herrenhauser Garten', a double orange hybrid.
What you have is a Sanguinea, and indeed, is native to the high Andes and prefers it cool, so in that sense you could say they may also be "difficult". I grow them here in the San Fernando Valley, just "over the hill" from Los Angeles, where we do have some hot summer days. My sangs do OK because I provide shade and keep the area moist
.
Pretty sangs Mainfrog!
That is a pretty brug. I think I just might have to "have" this one, don't you think?????
You might have good luck with it in your zone Anna. Just a bit too warm here to get blooms.
Yes, Kell, I'm always excited when I see the balloon-shaped buds swelling with the promise of these red beauties. I'm looking forward to more blooms this spring/summer. I actually thought they would bloom in the winter, since they reportedly like the cool weather, but so far I've seen no buds. In addition to the red sang (rarest of them all) I'm also growing a yellow and an orange. These are recent acquisitions that I hope to see bloom this spring as well.
Although the trumpets are much smaller than the other varieties they are like jewels.
Brugie: just how warm does it get in Chariton, IA?
Where I live our summers will have days with temperatures in the 90's, so you might reconsider and maybe try one in a shady area of your garden.
Last summer we had temps over 100 with a heat index of 116 one day and several days at about 115. I've had three sangs. One croaked, and two lived, but they just never bloomed. I don't have a greenhouse, so holding over plants is a problem here. When we get below zero in the winter for extended periods of time, it isn't feasible to heat a greenhouse either.
Brugie: I had no idea your summers were so hot! You're right: sangs are not suitable for your area. High 90's? maybe, a few days. 115 ? I'd croak too (and I don't mean ribit)!
I just had a thought: if many continue growing brugs indoors as a housplant during the cold winter months, how about growing the sang in a large pot, as a houseplant and move indoors during the hot summer days? Just a thought ...
I tried growing one in the bay window a couple of years ago. They just don't grow the same in a window as they do outside. The biggest problem came when I did take it outside and it got hot. The plant didn't handle it well at all. I don't know what would happen if you had a skylight that one could sit under. It might just work. Would be interested in hearing about it if someone does grow one inside.
Anna, I purchased one from them last year and it sure didn't look like a Brug to me. It was very small but it didn't make it but I'm still not convinced it was a Brug plant. I've never seen a Sang but it sure didn't look anything close to my other Brugs.
Brugie, do you think it would grow inside under a plant light?
Liz is the person to answer the questions about Sangs. She grows them and I'm sure would help you with answers. I know they will grow to about 3 ft. under a light, but after that I had to make some changes and obviously they weren't the right ones. LOL!! Good Luck. I'll send Liz a link to this thread so that she can take a look here and see if she can help you.
