I can't believe we aren't even into January and my house is already being swallowed up by plants. I'm going to have to get creative to find places for all these seedlings.... May is long time to wait! I've honestly tried to restrain myself and grow just a few from each cross. Trouble is I want to try as many crosses as possible!
Are you growing any seeds?
no seeds have germinated for me since summer...I think I lost my touch......or I should say I'm back where I started...seed challenged
Maybe I should give them away, everyone seemed to have better luck with mine than I did.....
They're not germinating? I'm still sticking with the bleach soak & paper towel method. I plant them after they sprout. I've had the best results that way.
Now I know who to hit up for plants come spring. :) I have seeds but still haven't started them. I still have some of Susie's of course, then some from others. I'm almost afraid to start too much since it's a new baby year, but I know I'll be sad if I don't. Geeze!
Your seedlings look great. I started a few seeds that are just now coming up. I've got to cut back on what I grow. I'm out of room, both inside and out.
Poppysue how do you do the "Bleach Soak and Paper Towel method". I don't know about it.....
Dee
I started some back in Oct, of Susies.
Here ya go Dee.. http://davesgarden.com/t/387192/
This way worked best for me too, until I learned of rockwool. :o)

Calalily brought seeds into the cooperative extension to be tested last year. They recommended soaking in one part beach to nine parts water to kill any fungus or bacteria on the seeds. Then I lay the seeds out on a damp paper towel labeled with the cross & date. Fold them up into a neat little square and seal them in a zip-lock baggie. I check them every few days for sprouting. Some sprout really fast but others can take a month or longer. If any of the seeds start to rot I'll re-dip the good ones in the bleach soak again and put them on a fresh towel.
So, do you cover them with the toweling? I asked someone this once before, but they told me that they only laid the seeds on the toweling and slipped them into the baggie without folding the seeds into the towels. Leaving the seeds exposed on the top didn't work for me.
Thanks for posting this thread, I am trying the papertowel and baggy method for the first time. I went to look at them and 2 of the papertowel seeds were growing a black mold, I didn't know about the bleach. So I just washed them off them put in the bleach solution. Thanks, Cathy
When presprouting in a baggie, I always make sure paper towel is touching both sides of the seeds and roots. I have had problems with rot before when either is touching the plastic.
Thanks Michele. I think this is where I've gone wrong. I'm doing all of mine right now in Rockwool and having good luck, but if I run out, I need an alternative method.
Yes... I fold the towel into quarters with the seeds inside. I'll have several little towel squares each with their own cross inside the baggie.
Thanks Sue. I think I'm going to try some of my extras to see how it works for me.
Just received my 200 rockwool cubes, yesterday. Now, all I need is some seeds of good crosses. I only have a seedpod on V. Orange, it is tsking forever to ripen!
Some I started in jiffypots are up. Have two Maya, green, not yellow, so this is a first.
YES!!!!
I knew someone could do it
who else got green ones?
Sue?
Congrats
I gotta start mine..... New Years resolution.....
I only had the one green... and that one dried up!
Crest please cross you fingers and your toes (heck all of you do it) that one of the maya that are sprouting will be green.
Hey ,I'm crossing every thing, fingers ,toes, ...beaks......
Wow I am so impressed Sue!! I am hoping mine will look like yours now that I have my seedling shelves. Thanks Sue!!!!!! Mine were reaching for the stars before on the window sills.
Shelly great job!! I have about 40 seeds in my rockwool. All that are already up, I started with Susie's method. Now I am trying other methods also! The ones I started like Monika does, are coming up fast also.
I am seed nuts this year and have no room for any!! LOL
Seedlings are looking good Kell. Sure is easier with a stand and lights, isn't it?
I ordered more rockwool! LOL Im just not having ANY luck with Monika's method, I know Im doing somthing wrong, but am glad the RW is doing its job.
Susies way really was great, I just always worried when I transplanted them. :o)
They do look great Kell! I think its so exciting, to think of the possibilities (sp?) in those babies!
Sue, Shelley and Kell, all your seedlings look great. It is so easy to run out of room fast. I have seedlings of all sizes and I swear I don't know what I am going to do with them in the spring. I just can't help myself and I have to say that there are a couple people on this thread that fed my addiction . . lol
lol Frannie, I hear ya about not being able to help yourself... a few on here fed mine also! Isnt it great?? :o)
Yes Shelley, it is great and I hope this year I have some great seeds and cuttings to share. Last year was terrible and I sure hope 2004 is better.
Wow, great crop there, Sue! I put some seeds in a baggie several days ago and am watching them closely :) I knicked them a bit as I would with any other seed. Did you do that at all? They were very soft shelled. This is my very first attempt at trying to germinate brug seeds.
It's interesting that Anna_Z has pruned back her brugs and you have so many leaves! I realize yours are just brand new, but it gets me to wondering whether or not I should prune the new growth. Think I'll post a thread about that :)
Morph, I peel my seeds right down all the way to the inner seed. I used to hate to peel and now I love the activity!! LOL. Who Knows!
Be careful looking too much into the bag, each time you could introduce bacteria or fungus.
I have more to start, hoping to find time to peel today! I am getting so impatient waiting on pods to mature.
I still have three pods on a couple versicolors that have been there since the first part of July and they are just as green as gourds. Can't figure out why it is taking so long. Six months is a pretty long stretch, isn't it?
I'm going to start a few next week.I have a very few pods still on the plants that didn't freeze last fall.
Thanks for the tips, Kell, on peeling & bacteria possibilities. Didn't know to peel and had never thought about the bacteria introduction each time I peak! Always great advice here :)
Anybody not peel the brug seeds and still have success?
brugie, about 10 days ago i recieved some cuttings that i had bought on the internet. i am going to list them for u and anyone else to comment on. i don't know whether i did good or not. #1- versicolor alba, #2- cypress garden (white), #3-dr, suess (gold(, #4-my pink, #5-candida pink, #6- janet reno (yellow), #7-frosty pink, #8-milk and honey, #9- isabella (pink) and # 10-insignis (solid gold). if anyone knows of anything i can do to help them grow, email me please. ty very much, jim
I don't always peel. It depends on the seeds. If they're easy enough to handle I'll peel them... the smaller ones I don't bother.
Jim, It looks like you got a great deal to me. You got some nice ones there!
Morph, Monika does not peel hers routinely, so you sure do not have to! For me it is a winter activity!
Jim. plant and feed!
I have seeds coming any day now, they were mailed on Saturday. I found some rockwool cubes at my favorite nursery. I was planning to buy some on the internet, but our regular address is our p.o. box, and the shipping would have been over $10 because it was through the p.o. instead of ups. They would only ship to our registered address :( So, instead of getting the small individual cubes, I ended up with 4"x 4"x 2 1/2". I'm going to slice them in half to make them just over 1" thick, then sow a different cross in each block.
Jim, I got some cuttings from Nestor last year. Most of them rooted without any problem and bloomed this summer, but I lost 3 of the ones that you got: Cypress Gardens, Candida Pink & Isabella. My mom, sister & I split the cuttings between us (they were at least 1' long, big enough to cut in half or thirds), and we lost every bit of those 3 varieties. It could have been just a cutting that didn't want to grow from an otherwise healthy plant, but I would watch them closely.
This is the first time I'm growing brugs from seeds.
The ones in the photo are from Calas ebay auctions.
I have 10 Butterfly x Bert and 19 Eventide x Bert up and a few other strays.
I'm waiting on some seeds to come in the mail, and I also have some bee pods I might plant from if they ever mature.
I have 4 big pods on Peaches & Cream. If I plant all of them I might get one that survives.
It's going to be fun to see what comes out of this.
I also have seedlings. They started germinating about a week ago. Yesterday, I started a new propagation bed just for the seedlings boxes in the winterhouse to keep them warm and to give the necessary light.
thanks to all that answered me. and ronna, if they that i have do good, i will send ya a cutting or two next fall if u will remind me. btw, i have many seed pods. how do u use the rock wool to germinate seeds?? is it necessary to have the cuttings under a sun lamp while u r trying to root them? if soo, do u have to add water to them every so often??

Anybody wanna finish my pregnancy so I have time to go play with my seeds too???
Those all look great!
LOL, Michele, you're just playing with one bigger "Seed" inside of yourself :)
Thanks Kell & Poppysue about the peeling part info.
Ronna, I think I'll try my local nursery for the rockwool ~ you've inspired me to try & find it locally rather than order online with shipping costs.
werewolf, here's a link where the rockwool is being discussed: http://davesgarden.com/t/411784/rockwool
