I suspend the cuttings by their leaves, in just the amount of water to cover the bottom of the cutting, not allowing the cutting to rest on bottom of jar. Seldom lose any. Forgot to say, have up under florescent lights, close but not touching leaves.

Starting green cuttings in water
Hm, I will have to try that sometime. I probably should do it with just something I was going to toss after I prune back my plants, just to see how it works. Thanks for posting.
Good picture Gloria. I have never worried about keeping them off the bottom of the glass or jar, but maybe that is why I have some that rot easier than others.
Thanks Shirl. I think the weight of the cutting pressing on bottom of jar, might cause bruising of the cutting.
Great picture!Good advice, this method does work well.
Root.
very interesting Gloria! I always thought they liked it more dark when rooting. Shows you what I don't know! LOL
They look very good Gloria.
Great tip Gloria! I'll have to give it a try. You'd die if you see how I'm keeping a bucket full of cuttings. Someone should come and take all my brugs away, LOL....
Company yet?
Those look like classy cuttings, Gloria! Nice photo.
Thanks everyone.
Kristi: Yes, company came Friday, then went to her mothers', will be back Monday and Tuesday. I should be planting rooted brug cuttings, but no place to keep them until grandkids are gone, so, they will have to stay together in these jars of water.
Might try that when I get new Pink Beauty cutting. Haven't had any luck with them green or woody cuttings.
Donna: I will try and root a couple Pink Beauty for you. You sure are having bad luck with it.
ding! dong! I am now at datdog's door.
Clean the house, Kristi......company coming, think it must be Avon lady, ding dong.
Gloria, thanks for posting this picture. The cuttings look great and maybe some of the more sensitive ones need to be done this way. What about the ones that have no leaves? Sometimes cuttings arrive that way. Do you have any idea how to keep them from touching the bottom. Your way of doing tip cuttings seems like an excellent idea that I will experiment with.
My house is clean thanks to my mom. Come on over. I'm lonely since she left......
I just started Tequila Sunrise and Shreaded white this way. Great idea. I'll report later.
BrugNanny,
I used masking tape criss crossed over the top of the glass then put a cutting in each opening. You can get for in a orange juice glass this way. It keeps the cuttings suspended so there is no worry of them touching the bottom should the leaves wilt for some reason.
I put wax paper over top of jar/hole for cutting, rubberband around the top, trim paper, so light can get to bottom of cuttings, then scotch or masking tape to make hole small enough that cuttings stay up. Or use aluminum foil/hole for cutting. Hope you understand this.
Thanks Hibiscus and flowerjunkie for all the extra info. You two sure are resourceful. I don't know if I would have ever thought of that.
the ding dong was because datdog decided to be a masochist and get rid of the brugs (I wish)!
We know. Sure thought it sounded like "Avon calling".
My Mom always rooted her African Violets and Coleus this way ..and they did very good.
I will have to try for for green brug cuttings.
Thanks for this, Gloria.
I especially love the brugs in goblet (o: LOL
Ha...those are wine goblets. Ed used to make wine. At one time had 62 gallons in basement, think that is over the legal limit for home use? He grew blackberries, four kinds of grapes, raspberries, strawberries, peaches, cherries and I could go on.
My DH made me one of those seedling PVC shelving units yesterday that Sue has. So I now have lights and empty window sills!! Tell me Gloria what kind of flourescent light do you use for rooting?
Just regular double white shoplights, probably 5' long.
Good luck, Kell. I have been rooting cuttings since October, just about finished.
Kell... the one Santa made for me uses just the regular shop lights, that hold 2 bulbs, I do one warm, one cool. (alternating) I read that somewhere, I think Scootboot said that somewhere.
Kell, you are going to love that shelving unit. Can't wait to see all your little babies peeking up for light.
Give us pictures, Kell. I love mine and spend at least an hour in my "grow room" every day.
That's great news Kell. I think they are very nice but I don't have a place to put one. In my greenhouse I have 18" x 3 " benches going down both sides of it. I have taken the shade cloth off and everything gets plenty of sunshine. I do not dare ask DH to build me one for inside of the house . . lol He just hates it when I plant seeds inside, I guess because I put them on the kitchen counter under the lights that are under the top cabinets. Now that I am thinking about it I would really like one just for seeds. Hmmmm . . everything out of the kitchen if he builds me a stand. I will let all of you know later . .lol
Kell, send your DH down my way to SA. lol
BrugNanny, my DH will kill me, but you just gave me an idea for starting seeds. I have four of those under the cabinet lights that I never turn on. Guess I'll have to test them.
Oh no, I hope I have not started something here. Seedling trays in the kitchen.. . let us know what he says . .lol
He will probably not be any happier than my DH is about the idea.
Gloria, I'm trying this with the EP cutting. Looks good so far :o)
Good luck Sue, hope they work.
Hibiscus,
Jenks and I are trying to figure out if it makes any difference in blooming time to take the green leaf set cuttings above or below the Y? Can you tell us what your experience has been?
flowerjunkie
Above Y should bloom sooner, this is why I start green cuttings. Some of my "good" brugs have not bloomed for me yet, so am trying new starts. I want to see those blooms, couple are doubles, supposed to be something special!
Thank You. This is wonderful news. I thought this might be the case, but I couldn't find any information on the subject other than hard wood cuttings.
Thanks again.
Thanks for this info Hibiscus!
I am trying this method on a small green cutting, but Im trying it with the water crystals. The crystals are holding up the cutting, so its not touching any part of the glass I have it in.
Everything looks good so far, even a new little leaf that has come out.
Shelly, I have heard great things about rooting in those crystals. Please let us know how you do with them! thanks
I have received cuttings packed in those crystals, saved the crystals and it takes forever for them to dry out. Thought about putting a handful around the brugs roots when potting for outside.
I have used them in planting holes and didn't really think they did that much good compared to those that didn't have them. Yes, they did go a bit longer without watering, but not enough to justify the cost of the crystals. Seemed to have to water them all at the same time anyway since I was out there, just to save myself time. Same with using them in pots....maybe a little more time, but as fast as brugs take up water, it didn't save a lot. In the bottom of some hanging baskets with other types of flowers, they worked well. Especially impatiens.
