Need help propagating bouganville

Frederiksted, VI(Zone 11)

I have 14 bouganvilla (bushy, climbing , vairagated) I need about 10 more but would rather not have to purchase. Can anyone tell me how to propagate by cutting? I have tried with no luck but am preety sure I am doing it wrong.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Happy Gardening!!!

msailaway,
My mom & I recently started about 50-60 cuttings from a Bougainvilla that I bought.
It took FOREVER for them to root, like 4 months, I did not use any hormone, just stuck the cuttings inside an old fishtank full of moist vermiculite and covered. A few did rot, but overall, they rooted. They looked nice & healthy. My mom transplanted them and they started dying off in a hurry until most had died & we only had 3 left. I did not think to tell her that bougainvilla cannot handle having their roots disturbed AT ALL! Even when you buy these already potted you have to be really careful to not disturb the roots because they break easily & do not repair themselves. I learned this from my Sunset Western Garden Book. It really explained alot. Since then, I have not had any problems with them until she did the transplants, but she did not know. She does now. LOL
So my suggestion would be, start them in pots that you can uncover & leave alone to grow in, and be PATIENT.
Best of luck!

Thank you for the good advice. Now that you mention it - I believe I have read the same thing. Hopefully, once I make it through 3 Kings day I will have time to give it a try.

I rooted a cutting in water. It did take longer than most other types of plant cuttings. (about 3-4 weeks I think) Then I planted it in a flower pot with potting soil and it seems to be doing fine.
Hope this helps.
