Ilex decidua (Decidous Holly, Possumhaw)

New Orleans, LA(Zone 9a)

I've just collected seeds of this plant and would like to know if there are any tips on germinating hollies. I think they may take a very long time to germinate, like two years is what I've been told. Is this true? Does this species take from cuttings?

Thanks for any info available.

I've also posted this under the Trees and Shrubs forum.

I was just reading about hollies on another site as I brought up this tread! What a coincidence! The following is according to the Fine Gardening Magazine's Website "Propagate by seed, cuttings, layering, or grafting. Seeds can take several years to germinate. Take cuttings from deciduous species in early summer and evergreen species in late summer. Treat the cuttings with hormones and root under mist."

Hope that helps! ;~D

Wonderful! Thank you Lisa. I know I'm not patient enough to wait years for something to germinate, so I guess I'll be out on the roadside nest summer with my pruners! Just have to remember where the females (hollies) are!!!

This is a great site run by a fellow right here in Ohio. he earns his living propigating shrubs and trees. He also has a monthly newletter which is free online and quite informative. Be sure to download his EBook for future reference too. www.freeplants.com
