I hope I have not told you all this before, but I am kinda senile, so maybe you will forgive me. I saw some cardinal flower today and it reminded me of this story.
When my spousal unit and I moved to the mountains, we started a small business delivering rainbow trout to restaurants. We bought them at a trout farm, dressed them, iced them and packaged them for delivery all within 24 hours. We covered a route about 300 miles long.
I couldn't believe all the gorgeous wildflowers here in the mountains of NC so I got a identification book published by UNC. When I spotted a flower I didn't know; I'd pull over and look it up.
One day, not far from the trout farm, I saw some cardinal flowers growing in a ditch. This was in the days before it was a known no-no to dig wildflowers. So the next day, I brought a shovel and got out to dig the cardinal flowers. I positioned the shovel and put my full weight behind the digging and sunk in mud up to my HIP!!!!
Well, I was stuck. I couldn't get out. This was right by the road and cars were going by with people staring at me. I was laughing so hard that I was weak; I must have looked totally insane. Everywhere I tried to push against was soft: I just sunk in the other foot. Finally, I found a firm place behind me on the bank and by using my arms I was able to finally push myself backwards out of the muck.
But there I was with one white leg, and one brown leg and only one shoe. Luckily, the Pigeon River was right across the road so I waded in and cleaned up.
I don't know how I went through the trout route with only one shoe, but I learned this lesson: IT'S NOT NICE TO FOOL WITH MOTHER NATURE!
funny story
Cool story, WS! I can imagine you near Brevard, Lake Toxaway and Cashiers with one shoe, LOL!
Woodspirit, thanks for sharing! I think being able to see the humor in situations is a real gift, and you obviously have it, not everybody could laugh at themselves that easily. Thanks for the chuckle......
Woodspirit, thanks for starting my day off with a smile! My love of gardening has gotten me into some embarrassing moments too - I'm glad you can laugh about it now.
Thanks for the kind remarks. I aim to please! Actually, I'm a bit of a ham and love to write so I just had to share this.
Woodspirit, that is a hysterical story! Thanks for sharing.
Woodspirit...What a funny story! You wrote it so well that I could visualize it just as if I was there myself!
What a great story! Life is often the biggest comedy!
thank you, than you, thank you for sharing that wonderful life story. i can related to being in an awkward situation and laughing and people looking at me like i've gone over the deep end. life is so full of joy and i'm so glad for you that you can relish in it.
