Anyone ever ordered brug plants from Parks Seed?

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

12/18/03 THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL YOUR ADVICE: I ORDERED SOME FROM E-BAY FOR $1.50 EACH AND WILL LET YOU KNOW HOW IT WORKS OUT :) GRETCHEN

I just opened the new seed catalog and realized that they sell Brugmansia x candida in Halo Peach and Lemon Yellow. They charge $9.95 per 3" pot. I really, really want to get started with brugs, and haven't yet figured any way other than purchasing some, as I have none to trade cuttings for. Any input and/or advice will be welcome! Thank you!!! Gretchen

I ordered my first brugs ever from them about 5 years ago.
They were called Candida yellow, which today to me looks like all the Dr. Suess. Smells good, I still have it. The other was a Peach Arborea(which was not!), looked like Versicolor Peach, do not have anymore.

Thank you Hibiscus -- I appreciate your input!

Gretchen... lots of people here from DG sell brugs, and seeds, and during spring and fall when people are cutting back their own brugs, they will sometimes send out cuttings for postage. If you look over to the right there ~~~> under "your menu" theres a "Members Stores" thing you can click. At least with the people here, you know what you will get for sure.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Shelly -- thanks! I just assumed (obviously incorrectly) that the member stores were retailers that were members here... must've been a blond moment. Am going to check it out now.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I dont know if any sell retail... could be (?) but I have bought brugs and/or seeds from a couple, and have been very happy! :o) The ones I bought from arent retail. Both ABADS and BGI also have links to people who sell.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Cala sells as a member store. http://calastropicals.com/module/store/
I only hear great things about her plants. She is also a great friend of mine!

She also sells some great seeds, some L'Amour mixes!

I bet in spring more here will have extras to give away. Lots of us send for postage Kaufman. I never trade.

kaufmann- i am also new to brugs and had nothing to trade. and my conscience wouldnt let me be ok with just 'taking' cuttings from others, even though everyone here is soo generous with their plants--

so, impatient as i am (can not wait till spring to start this:) ) i went on ebay and bought dr suess cuttings for 1.50 each. i was ill advised by some on here retroactively, but it was a quick fix. and now i wont feel bad about killing any dg'ers wonderful brugs since i have no clue what im doing. in effect- these will be my test run.

it has so far proved to be a good experience. i only purchased one, and they sent me 2. and they look pretty good to me. so until spring, these will work! thats my 2 cents from one newbie to another.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Ebay has a good selection and most brug sellers are long time growers. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you go through ebay. http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&ht=1&query=brugmansia

Thank you so much! Happy Holidays!!!

St. Louis, MO(Zone 6b)

I got into the act, acquiring two sets [20 cuttings], each 10-12" long [will cut in half]. Great price. Arrived today. Great way to spend the Christmas holidays, taking care of the new members of the family. Thanks poppysue for calling the blowout sale to my attention. These will make fine gifts [read bribes] for the students whom I am recruiting to help in the greenhouse while I am on the road.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

My birthday is tomorrow, so it was a great combo birthday-Christmas present... I just hope I can get them to grow for me! I'm sure your students will be thrilled, Padre!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gretchen, Happy Birthday. I might not be online tomorrow, so would hate to miss the opportunity to tell you that I wish you the best day ever. Have a good one!!

Thank you Shirley!!!

I got one of nestor's lots too-- they should arrive today, but i'm not there! im visiting family in oklahoma right now. you think they'll be ok in the box until sat night or should i ask a friend to go get them out for me? i would be so sad to lose them. merry christmas everyone!! susanne

St. Louis, MO(Zone 6b)

Nestor didn't wrap them in wet paper so they are apt to dry out some. I have read (no experience of my own) that they can sit unattended for a long while (week?) but if you expect extreems of temoerature, I would suggest that you get them into a safe place.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

I also won one of the lots:

Frosty Pink with what looks like a bud with seeds?
Insignis Gold
Suavolens Yellow Gold
Insignis White
Insignis Solid Gold
Dr. Seuss
Isabella
Charles Grimaldi
My Pink

Now to go read and learn and not kill them. :)

I also got 1 of Nestors offerings.I am fit to be tied and don't know what to do so I'll just ask. Surely someone knows the answer. What do you cut the stems with? I tried a seratted knife and everything else I could find to cut with but can't cut through. That night my son came over and tried to cut them, succeded on some, but had to break some and I know that couldn't be the way to do it. Right now they are sitting in water. Can I start all over with a sharp knife? What kind of knife?PLMK

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Would an electric knife do it? I got the cuttings Friday. Walmart is open today (sunday). Is it to late to try again?

St. Louis, MO(Zone 6b)

I used a hack saw with a coarse blade for the thickest (pruning saw?, a long handled tree pruning shears or smaller pruning shears for the others. A knife will not do it. Brug wood is very hard. It would be like cutting down your Christmas tree with a knife. Good luck. The cuttings will survive.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

also the big pruning shears, like the loppers. I would think these would make a clean cut. (please dont take my advice tho, just somthing I will try, as they cut thru my trees like butter.)

You can look them up @ homedepot.com (Icouldnt get the link to work, just type in lopper)

Thanks Padre and Shelly-I didn't even think of loppers or a hack saw. It threw me for a loop since I have never seen a brug and just wasn't expecting the wood to be so hard. I've read all the brug forum and I didn't hear anyone say any thing about the hard, thick wood. Now I know and I'll be prepared for the next one.

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

I use my scroll saw.If you have one, these are ideal.

I am quite pleased with what I received. I purchased one lot (10) cuttings as stated above. Because they were so large I ended up with 18 small and 10 large. I cut the large ones with a serrated knife, only because I couldn't find where DH put my hacksaw... I also have a jigsaw which would've taken the elbow grease out of the job had I used it. I thought about using loppers but was afraid they would pinch too much, and kill them.

As of yesterday, 80% of the small ones have tiny little leaves beginning to emerge from the nodes!!!!!!!

Sounds like the cuttings were really healthy. God job Gretchen.
