My DH yanked my lavender moonflower vine (ipomoea macrorhiza) that had seed pods on it. I was waiting for them to ripen, but now what do I do? Some are dry and look ripened, but then there are some pods that are still green. If I just leave them to dry on their own, will the seeds ripen even though they have been pulled out of the ground?
Yanked vine ... will seed pods still ripen?
That small brown one on the right looks like it should have seeds ripened in it.
I'd sure let the others dry and see what happens. You can always do a quick germination test later.
Don't know how long the plant has been pulled but if it is still green is there any chance you can cut some tips and root them in water?
Thanks Horseshoe!
DH pulled the vines early this morning, so I quickly put them in water right after reading your post. I pulled off the dried seed pods and, yup, there's seeds! So now, cuttings are in water, but the green seed pods are still attached. Should I remove the green seed pods as they sit in the water? Thanks!
Yes, I'd remove the seed pods. Let them dry on their own. If they are still on your cuttings they may take too much energy from the cuttings...you want to stimulate root growth, not seed growth.
I started some cuttings of P. alata in water. I cut them about 4 to 8 inches long. (I'd take as many as you can to increase your chances of success.) It took a long time (over 3 or 4 weeks) but now have some good roots coming from them. Don't give up. Remember to change the water and keep them in the house where it is warm. (Not too much direct sun.)
Crossing my fingers for ya!
