HappyNewYears! (a bit early)

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Just finished writing this one. :-) Get your tissues!

I was walking through the woods the other day, when something caught my eye.
The smallest movement and the faintest little sigh.
Now- me being of a curious nature, I decided to investigate.

Sitting there all alone I saw a little boy talking softly to what seemed an invisible friend.
Smiling I went to him and squatted down.

"Hello there son, who ya talking to?"

Slowly the boy gazed up at me, with tears in his blue blue eyes. Taken aback I asked what was wrong.
It was then I saw he held a strap of leather, and a collar old and worn.

Softly the boy spoke.

" I was just saying goodbye to LittleBit."

Oh, I thought, this little boy has lost his dog.
Quiet for a moment I looked at the boy thoughtfully.

I could see he wanted to say more, so I just smiled gently as he haltingly continued on.

" Little Bit came to live with us five years ago. He was sooo tiny and smelled like cottoncandy. Mom said I was a big boy now and it was my job to help take care of him."

I nodded understanding.Man, this boy must have really loved his dog.
" Wasnt very long after he came home that he started acting sick. We took him to the doctors and they said he had cancer."

Touching the boys arm I urged him to go on, surely talking about it would help some.

" Yeah. Little Bit was the best." He said on a forlorn sigh.

" We used to play here," He said pointing to the creek down the hill. " Til he got too sick that is."

" Yeah, I used to play with my dog in a place like this when I was your age too."

The boy, caught up in memories didnt hear my reply.

It was then I heard a rustling in the bushes, as I turned I saw the sweetest little puppy running towards us.
It ran full speed into the boy, plopping soundly in his lap.

I asked a bit surprised. " Is that your puppy?"

" Yeah. My mom bought him for me and my brother the day he went into the hospital for Chemo."

The shock was nearly enough to knock me on my back.

" Your brother?" I asked on a pained whisper.

He simply replied. " Mom called him LittleBit."

Things are seldom as they seem. Never take for granted the time you have, or the people you love.
You never know when they are to flee.
May this new year find you filled with a greatful happiness.
