Hard Freeze Warning for Southerners!!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I haven't put all my plants under temp. GH or in the Garage at new house.. Boy, I am going to need lots of help to bring my plants in our new big garage! It's going to be crazy today. I will make my kids ( Sammie 11, Dustin 7) to help me! It's going to be lots of walks forth and back from old house to new house! I don't have a garden wagon! :o(.. But I want to Thank my Dh for letting me use the our New Garage to save our plants from cold and freeze weather!

Have you all save your plants for tonight?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Good luck getting all your babies to saftey-looks like you need to ask santa for a wagon! ;)

Did you see Minnesota got 13inches-we are going to get some here by turkey day!!!

one day closer to spring-right!?!

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

It's 32 right now...coldest day yet for me.I guess it's time...had to mow the yard over the weekend,it was so scraggeldy.Wish I had another zone or two under my belt every year at this time, but 'zone envy' does me no good.

The one good thing about it is,the kudzu will finally die back.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Woke to 27F this morning, what hadn't been brought into the house was under covers, surveyed this morning...droopy but still can save most plants and take cuttings today. What I don't like Mel is the yoyo pattern in the weather.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

We spent a frantic (but warm!) afternoon yesterday doing some minor repairs to the GH, and reattaching the plastic to get it ready for this cold snap and the inevitable winter. I've still got some taping to do, but it's much more snug than it was before now. The REALLY tender stuff is headed to my laundry room this afternoon.

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

It was 34º this morning ... it was only supposed to get down to the low 40's ... *sigh*

I'll haul in the few things that get protected this afternoon. It's supposed to get down to 28º tonite.
Waaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!

Cheri'

i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter i hate winter

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

sundry, I feel I should warn you - there's a tarpot and feathers around here somewhere. It's threatened for deep south people who complain about winter.

This legendary tarpot is tended all winter by northerners who have nothing better to do, and - for some strange reason - seem irritable when anyone south of zone 5 complains about a cold snap! (*grin*)

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

14 degrees this morning with flurries after a balmy 66 yesterday.
I hate these big drops in temps, they say it takes your body 3 days to adjust to these , I vote for a 'Heat Wave' =)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey, I don't take offense until I have to see people's plants blooming while out my window I see dead sticks, naked spots and seed heads! LOL I'm a bit more generous. I don't even get zone envy until I see 8 or higher. :)

Little snow balls dropping in Ohio today. :( I think I heard 18 for tonight. Wahahahahahhh boooo hoooooo

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Hello, It was 75 degrees here yesterday. Today it is 30 and SNOWING. Wondering if it is snowing in your part of KY, Mel? We had miserably cold rain last night and it looks like winter. I am not complaining so put down the tarpot....how can I complain, we had such a wonderful fall :) I hope no matter what your weather is today, you are enjoying your day one way or another. Happy Day, Kathy

It's was in the low 80's here yesterday, I was digging daylilies and having lots of fun. And WHAM - it's winter. *sigh*

'course, it's supposed to be back in the 80's by mid week.

Cheri'

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Lilypon-NO way im ever going to zone UP!!
I cant even imagine colder than where I am...I know that stork was all turned around when he left me in Michigan-I was suppose to go to Hawaii!! ;) Somewhere theres a girl in Hawaii sweating bullets! ;)

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Well we're supposed to get to 29 by morning here. We were supposed to get a freeze a few weeks ago, but it didn't really happen. The coleus got frostbite, but nothing died. 29 will do it though. :( Get out that tar and feathers as I tell you what's blooming here today:

cosmos
nicotiana
*dianthus
marigolds
celosia
coleus
*petunia
mandevilla
morning glory/moonflower
osteospermum
roses
*allysum
basil
mexican heather
*pansies
geranium
*mums
*kale
black eyed susans
lablab
dahlia
gazania
*bacopa
*scabiosa

The ones with the * will probably still be blooming after the freeze, the others will be gone.
I'm DEFINITELY not complaining, just sharing. :)

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

It was in the mid 70's here yesterday and they are calling for the temperature to drop to 23 degrees tonight. I can handle cold weather but temperature swings this drastic send me into shock. All of my plants are either in the basement or the garage - - so all I will have to do tonight is stick my hanging baskets filled with violas inside for the night.

I remember one winter in the early 1990's when it actually when down to 25 below zero here in Tennessee. It killed off a lot of the perennials that normally live through our winters, including all of my crape myrtles.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I think we should *do* Drew and Cheri FIRST! And poor Lilypon should get the pictures. :)

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Alright Drew, it's supposed to get down to 34 tonight in Willacoochee. You better start looking for firewood. By the way, if you see some strange folks with feathers in their hands, you better run! LOL Nat

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Chele I agree 100%

2 **********TAR SPLATS********** for them
quick toss the feathers!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Wooooooooooooosh! Feathers as ordered! (Not enjoying the view of my naked trees and things flying by my windows! At least the grass is still green.....)

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

No snow here in this part of KY,and there's a few things that still are hanging in there.Anything with an overhang over it survived. Just wish winter would come on and get it over with...fall was too long and too enjoyable...I got used to it.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

this is last spring-but you get the idea! ;)

First freeze of the season last night (29 degrees). I brought my potted ficus and the other tender things inside yesterday. The poor morning glory was in full bloom yesterday, but is in sad shape today. It's time to start taking it off the fence and clearing out the flower beds now. I hate winter!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Save the seeds Bill for the Piney Woods Party this spring!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I, too, lament the quick change from balmy to instant winter, Brrrrr! The temp. has dropped 20 degrees since I got up this morning... and another 20 to go before dawn. Yuck!

Maybe this will warm you!

Look nice fireplace so I had 2 of them and not use it anymore but could use for outside while my DH or my Boys working outside yard that help something to warm it up.

Edited.

I've been stirring that tar pot for weeks now. I'm having trouble finding the feathers though as the birds flew south a long time ago. LOL
This was my yard on Oct.22 of this year. The temps have been in the 20's and 30's for several weeks now with two nights in the single numbers.

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

Keep that tar pot warm for me! I'll be looking to warm up in it ...

Gads, I can't stand to be cold. I know ya'll have no sympathy, but that's ok. I'm still miserable.

Cheri'

Lindale, TX(Zone 8a)

"eyes": My Morning Glory is the sterile kind, no seeds. It comes back each year from runners that rooted in the ground. I'll bring plenty of sprouts from the runners to the Piney Woods Party this spring.

"snowhermit": Although I hate the cold weather, I would love to see a big snow like your photo at Christmas just once. I'm older than dirt, and I've never seen a White Christmas.

Bill

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Badseed what makes you think it's so cushy in zone 8. The king of dalhias has about 175 still in the ground and did I tell you it was 20 at night getting up to a whopping 36 a couple of days. Got maybe 35 varieties dug expect to lose most of the rest.Thats the price of working for a living so with order blank in hand I have picked about 25 varieties to purchase to rebuild my herd with.

Add to this the floods of the last month and wow i still like it here it's still good Ernie

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

34 isn't but a thing...
plus all my plants have been in greenhouses for a few months.

I'd be careful, you city folks comming to willacoochee with tar and feathers....
just remember, us farm folk are armed better than most army platoons.

Crazy happenings in the coochee this day, big ole gasoline tanker flipped over out front of my farm.... 8,000 gallon tanker.
oddly enough, nobody harmed.
forget the firewood, I shoulda be pumping gas off the road.

if it makes any of you feel better, I spent the majority of my life in the cold northlands. I didn't like freezing my a** off so I moved :-)
traded beautiful hills, seasonal interest, and intelligent people, for the hot and humid southlands full of well... nevermind.

Drew

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Good MOrning! When I woke up, there's heavy frost/freeze all over. It's 30's.. wind chill at 30. It looks like a snow.
Last night, I got to save all my plants and moved to the garage. The last thing, I begged my DH to bring the big pot of Golden pothos that are sitting on the ground under shade and they grew lots of vines all over. I told him, just pull and dont care if you broke it or else. He just pulled and rough with that. HE said BOY, it's soo heavy. Next time you plant in a small pot instead a big pot! AFter he brought it to the garage. By at 9pm, it started to get frost. I went outside in the dark and collect the golden pothos broke and rooted into the ground. I pulled several out. I know some are still there but they will grow back in the spring.. Now I need to go back into the garage and check for bugs and everything. This week, its going to be warm up again!

BOY, I hate winter! I agree with Sundry. I am winter wimp!! LOL Glad it wont stay cold or freeze that long where I live.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Guess yall better get the tar and feathers out for me. After reading this thread I just can't control myself rotflol. I had to put my robe on for my morning garden walk looking at new growth and flower blossoms. Little chilly to be out in my jammies this morning (66) But save your sympathy, LOL, it's 77 now. Back in 1973 I moved to Texas from Michigan. Lived there for 4 years and much as I loved Texas, it wasn't the sun belt. Moved to Orlando, still too cold. Now it doesn't get cold here til January. And rest assured, we have had times it was in the 30's and the power company was rationing electricity. (Can you imagine, no power for 4 or 5 hours at a time?) HAd to go out to the car for heat and radio. waa waa waa. poor me. LOL.

Love all of ya, Keep your chins up....Molly
