I've already lost (inadvertently killed) two cuttings: Kyles Giant White, and Maya. Butterfly and Kell's Big Yella are a bit soft and wrinkled but they seem to be holding their own for now.
If anyone plans to take brug cuttings soon, I'd appreciate being added to your cuttings list.
I will be happy to pay for postage in advance if that is preferable.
Veronica :-)
Lost Cuttings :-( :-( :- (
If they are soft did you feel where they go into the dirt? You may want to pull them up and see if they are rotted at the base. If my cuttings start to go bad I immediately recut them and stick the end in water then rootone and start over. I have even gotten 1 inch tips to reroot and grow.
You may also want to wait till spring. Everything takes off in spring and it makes it so much easier to go along with nature.
Thank-you Kell. The part of Butterfly that is in the soil feels firm. Her top half is not mushy, just soft and wrinkled compared to the bottom half. The part of Big Yella that is in the soil is also firm but his top half has withered. When I checked this morning, I noticed his top half is now brown. When I get home this evening, I plan to remove the brown, withered part. However with Butterfly, I wasn't sure if I should cut or not.
Mine is doing the same but on the Rosamond. It was doing the exact same thing delecie. I pulled it gently up and their was a root there, so I replanted it in some fresh soil. It still is in the same shape even now. I cut the top off this morning. I hope I didnt do anything to kill it by this.
**sigh**
I would cut off both their tops. Cut to firm green flesh. I then cover the cut with rooting hormone. I do not know if it helps but I understand it has an antifungal ingredient in it and even though you do not want the top to root, it will close the wound and protect it.
If they die do not worry. I can resend in the spring. God willing! But you will have to bug me. LOL. I have no memory left.
PS only water when dry. Esp in the fall, things rot easily!
Thanks again Kell. I will cut and dust (with rooting hormone) when I get home.

I think we'll have to start a brug cuttings support group. You and I are probably not the only two having problems. Okay, I'll start it off:
Hi, my name is Veronica and I'm a brug cuttings killer. :-(
LOL
I think that Roadrunner is the president of this club. LOL So far all of my cutting are doing fine. (knocking loudly on some wood) They are getting coated with ashes as we speak, poor babies. When the wind dies down this evening, I will change their water.
Janice:
I was thinking of you yesterday. The footage that I've seen on the news has been horrible! Stay safe and may God bless you and your family.
Thank you. I am fine here but many others are not. The conditions here are in the fires' favor.

Those spiders will get to you yet.
Janice:
Don't worry about the spiders. They are not important at a time like this.
I don't want to step on anyones toes but I will pass this on.
Same thing happened here......So I got some advice from a friend and she does hers like this......
She starts hers in small clear plastic cups, drill holes..in the bottom of the cups..screen on the bottom and a little gravel....and then the dirt.
You can see the roots, she dosn't say to use root tone, although you can.
Pack the soil around them tight and be careful not to over water and they should be fine. When you see good roots then pot up and try and disturb the root system as little as possiable. Set them at the same level as they were rooted. Again pack in the soil tightly.
I think you can lose some no matter what. Just have to get more and keep trying.........
The photo below is courtsey of my friend and with her permission...she has sent me lots of cutting as well as rooted plants. I hope this helps some of us Newbees to get a good start....

I think all of us have lost cuttings. You gals would laugh if you knew how many I lost in the first year. It really stinks when it's that special brug you were so happy to get.
Don't worry. There will always be another chance. Pretty soon you'll be pulling your hair out trying to figure out where you can plant all your babies!
i've recently lost 4 sunray cuttings. All from different people. New cuttings will also die from the top down until the rot reaches the first leaf node and then it should stop.
I can't keep Whiskers cuttings alive for long..everytime they die.Guess I'm not supposed to have that one.
See David...we all have our problem children. Even Eclipse has trouble at times. These things just show us that they can be tempermental at times. I think I finally have a cutting that is rooting of FM. I don't believe it is what we are doing, but maybe an environmental thing or the sign of the moon isn't right or something. LOL!! Good luck to everyone trying to root cuttings. Hopefully you will still have plenty to make a yard full of blooms next year.
After reading everyone's posts, now I don't feel so bad.
Dee:
Thank-you for the rooting information. I'm going to add it to my Brugmansia folder and try it the next time I try rooting some cuttings. It never hurts to try more than one way to accomplish your goal. :-)
