Same thing happened here......So I got some advice from a friend and she does hers like this......

She starts hers in small clear plastic cups, drill holes..in the bottom of the cups..screen on the bottom and a little gravel....and then the dirt.

You can see the roots, she dosn't say to use root tone, although you can.
Pack the soil around them tight and be careful not to over water and they should be fine. When you see good roots then pot up and try and disturb the root system as little as possiable. Set them at the same level as they were rooted. Again pack in the soil tightly.
I think you can lose some no matter what. Just have to get more and keep trying.........


The photo below is courtsey of my friend and with her permission...she has sent me lots of cutting as well as rooted plants. I hope this helps some of us Newbees to get a good start....
