got one layer of plastic on yesterday before it rained cats and dogs. Enough to protect my babies from any light frost that might come until this next weekend when it's complete.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

tig....congratulations on your new abode??? are your babies, the Brugs....how cold does it really get in Georgia, where you are? Elaine,( brugnut's buddy)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

it's usually not too bad, but we did get down to 7° this past winter. I got the heater the Shoe recommended and am hoping for good things:)

Verrrry nice! Please post more pictures as you get farther along! You can fit a lot of brugs in there! :)

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

OOOOO boy! That looks really good. Isn't it fun!!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Congrats tiG! Did your fellas build this from scratch? I looks great... and I bet you are excited! :)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

they did build it from scratch. we could have bought a kit for what they spent, but then you have to add shipping....

I love it, and it's sooooooooooo much fun!

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

ohhh, seems like a good time to bring this kinda thing up...
if anyone here at daves needs some sorta greenhouse parts/accesories etc, I tend to get them fairly cheap.

plus i buy in bulk and know these folks really well www.atlasgreenhouse.com
most of my houses are built by them.
just the same, TIG, I got this nifty stuff called batten tape. It is essentially a black plastic mesh you put over the plastic and staple through into the wood framing on a greenhouse.... plastic in a wind storm or just in general will pull off a staple.

food for thought.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

drew, he's planning on putting wooden slats over the plastic to protect the staples. that will work, right? we will probably replace this plastic in the summer with the good stuff anyway, this is 6 mil. wish I'd known at the RU, I would have bent your ear all day.
how expensive is the batten tape?

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

cheaper and easier to deal with than wood slats.
wood works, but wood will pull up, shrink, stretch etc.
I do both on some spots...

another thing you could do, instead of taking the plastic off, is do some stringers @6ft and use the battentape/wood deal there... that way come warm weather you can raise the sides.
I have a neighbor that does this with her greenhouses...
she has twice my greenhouse space, 8, 200by 35ft houses...
reckon if it works on those, it certainly should work for you.

another thing, I generally use locally sawn cypress as opposed to 2by4's that are treated. They fair better in the end...

ohh and never use 1bys for anything, they split in hard wind, I lost a whole house that way once in 80mph winds...
the footboard and all the plastic blew off.
Made for an interesting 2am.

Drew, where do you get the batten tape? What does it cost?

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

don't remember rightly.... the farm I bought had rolls and rolls of it sitting around...
than I went to an auction for another grower that went outta business and picked up a bunch of rolls (2,000ft) for like $2 a peice.

lemme look around a bit and see what it costs brand new.

I would like to know too. My gh is shed style, attached to garage so it's 8 ft high on one side, 7 ft on the other for slope and is gh uv panels over 2 x 4s. I have plastic to add a layer to the inside and was planning to do that this weekend. As it will be the interior wall, it will be protected from the wind, but need something to keep the staple from cutting the plastic.

BTY, tiG, great gh. wish mine had more height. some of my brugs are touching the ceiling, others I had to cut. Keep sending update photos.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Linda, try weatherstripping to go between the plastic and the staple.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Great idea, is it cheap?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

sure, get that stuff that you put around door frames, about 1/2" wide or so. easy to work with, you just hold it up as you staple. got that idea from this forum, can't remember who to credit though.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Tig it looks wonderful!
I'm impressed and I know how long you've wanted it

Way to go girl!!!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

thanks! now to get the door on and power run this weekend and then I'm set to move in. I can barely wait!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

If you don't mind me asking tiG (and if you do let me know and I'll delete this :) ), but how much is this thing costing you? Just curious for my own plans...wahahahaha...

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

about $600 so far with heater, power and gas lines and bubble wrap.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Wow, tiG, that's a deal even though you supplied the labor!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I hope so, it's much more than we expected.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Wow that's great. Who laid the lines?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Johnnie has done it all. He's the handiest man I know.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

pat him on the back for me :)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

:)

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)

That is very nice and big greenhouse. It looks great!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

hey, Bonnie... if you can find a copy, you might want to read an old Rodale book, "Solar Greenhouses". I'm about halfway through, and it gives many wonderful tips about managing greenhouses in general, esp. ones with plastic glazing.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

thanks! we don't have panels on it yet, but he's already planning how to improve it next year. He's going to take the pvc roof off and make a real one:) we'll see! LOL!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

If you do get a different roof, he Rodale book has a lot of research data on various roofings, specifically with how they affect plant growth as well as heat management, and the importance and effect of air circulation in the GH.

At first, it was hard reading as it is pretty technical, but then I got the hang of all the terminology. I have decided it's a book that definitely belongs among my gardening books, whether I end up with a GH, a cold frame, or just sunny spots in the house for plants.

Weatherford, TX(Zone 7b)

Batten tape runs about $29.00 for 500ft around here. Its about 1"wide.We decided to go with the KWIC KLIP base and cap on our 12x34 cost at about 92.00. We get alot of staight line winds around here and DH doesnt like to fix things in the middle of the night!Poly Patch 4" was 10.50.Im amazed at the different cost of these supplies. It really pays to shop around. Its kinda like buying hay off season around here.I bought our Poly last year and it was 70.00 for shipping. After looking (real hard) I could have picked it up myself within 40 miles and saved some.Just really got to look around ya know?

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

tiG, send us some pictures of the inside of your GH whenever you find time from moving plants inside. Bet you are loving it. Donna

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Well, lookee here! Your g-house is up and running!
Congrats, tiG!

(And look folks...first thing she put in there is a brug!)

I get batten tape from several sources...HPS comes to mind right off, only cuz I've dealt with them so much on other stuff. You can also use the "shipping strap" that people use to bind down pallets with, not the metal stuff but rather the white polyvinyl (?) flex stuff.

Lookin' good! Lookin' good!
