big question on ipomoea

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

has anyone heard of ipomoea purga?? i got a few seeds in trade and cant find anything on them. the lady said they sorta look like a four o clock but a vine.

to me the seeds look like the purple moonflower seeds but smaller. she aslo said the flower is pinkish fusia color.

anything i do find on it goes to jalapa. what ever that is. any help with a flower pic or any info is greatley welcomed and appriciated.

Four o'clocks are Mirabilis jalapa. I don't know if that helps at all or not. LOL Now I'll have to look up jalapa to see what it means!

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

It's also called Ipomoea jalapa, Morning glory relative-in the convolvulus family

A few google hits-

http://www.ibiblio.org/herbmed/eclectic/bpc1911/ipomoea-purg.html

Ipomoeic Ip`o*m[oe]"ic, a. (Chem.)
Pertaining to, or designating, an acid obtained by the
oxidation of convolvulin (obtained from jalap, the tubers of
Ipom[oe]a purga), and identical in most of its properties
with sebacic acid.
Jalap Jal"ap, n. [F., fr. Sp. jalapa; -- so called from
Jalapa, a town in Mexico, whence it was first obtained.]
(Med.)
The tubers of the Mexican plant Ipom[oe]a purga (or
Exogonium purga), a climber much like the morning-glory.
The abstract, extract, and powder, prepared from the tubers,
are well known purgative medicines. Other species of
Ipom[oe]a yield several inferior kinds of jalap, as the I.
Orizabensis, and I. tuberosa.

I think most people refer to the tubers as Jalaps-they are on some of the noxious weed lists, so you may want to check before planting loose.

I have I. Purga growing - no blooms yet. But there's still time and I'm waiting (tap, tap, tap) on a few - very patiently, as you see (tap, tap, tap) ...
