Lapagerias are MY very special trade.

They are difficult little things, they need long term stratification and for you, it is a God send that we have inverted season : as you're going into winter and cold weather, Lapagerias requires a long term stratification.

Plant them now and leave them in the cold, protected, soil moist but not wet and do not allow it to freeze......

By your Spring, dormancy will break and they'll start to germinate for you. This seeds have a very high % of germination.

Hi, lucky Lapageria growers!

Just want to add a link that can be useful to have your seeds germinated:

http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/lapageria/myhomepage/garden.html

Cristina is supplying you with very, very special and hard to get seeds.

I wish you all the best of luck growing our national flower.

Greetings and sunshine from Chile,

Ursula

Jacksonville, IL(Zone 5a)

The seeds came today in your clever packaging! Thanks so much. Now that I see how you packaged the seeds, I will try again on the seeds I tried to send earlier. This time I think I will be able to squeak them through! Thanks again. I'm really looking forward to growing the vines. And thanks also, Ursula, for the great link!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I will resend also when I see how to do it. Does that mean also not to fill out customs form??

Temuco, Chile(Zone 9b)

DonnaB If you send it as a letter, you don't need to.

If you send it in bubble wrap envelope, you can declare it as cards, greeting cards or photos. Someone once wrote: "garden ornaments" LOL well plants are VERY decorative, I thought that one was very clever.

Just wait until you get my letter

Love you!
Cristina

Lapagerias are difficult seeds to germinate because they do have a very set dormancy.

The only requirement is patience, they do need a long period of cold humid medium, mimicking their natural enviroment. With this specie, we cannot do better than nature.

In a pot put some good seed raising soil, rich with humus ( compost) and wih good drainage. Wet the soil and on top scatter the seeds, cover them with soil making sure that they will remain covered (1/8 "), spray some water in top to make sure that the top soil is moist.

Keep it in a cold medium, protected from heavy rain ( they love humidiy but they hate wet "feet") and do not allow them to get frozen (no snow on top).

Just use the fall and winter to stratify the seeds in a natural way and you will be happy with the results.

By spring you will see them germinating.

I do disagree with what the information you'll find in the link.

The photos are good, though.

In my opinion, it is too complicated and it is not necessary to follow all those steps.

I did my lot in the way I described and know I have lots of green little shots appearing in my seed sowing pot

Thanks so much for sharing the info with us Cristina!

Your method sounds much easier!!!

Can I accomplish the same thing by putting them in the fridge instead of outside.
Our weather makes it to risky to put things out that can't have snow on them!!
Thanks
Alice

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

I agree Cristina,
....... I have found mimicking Mother Nature is usually the best way to go.

.......I have germinated many seeds just by simple methods. Some seed were recommended to start in exotic ways such as gelatin ,etc. When these plants grow outdoors ...there is NO gelatin and they still grow..

..... Just like plants that freely re-seed over winter, most of these will be winter sowed with good results. Just because a seed has been given a special name does not change the way it needs to grow.

......The only exception I believe would be older, hard seeds....due to our storing them.... that may need some help via soaking ,nicking, peeling or filing..... =)

....I ramble on again....I'm finished....lol

I am very much looking forward to the conclusion of our trade ;~D

Alice, the only problem with fridge is that there isn't any air circulation and fungus can grow rampant in 3 month.

A little place in a cold porch? or in the garage were they could be cold enough?

I would find a little place where you could put an empty plastic pot on top of the seed raisin flat, that you can take off from time to time to check humidity and give some air circulation, that would be fine.

If you have to do with the fridge then you will have to keep a good eye on them....

In the area where they thrive winter is cold and rainny so they need to be moist.

In the temperate forest where the vine thrive it may snow a bit but never for days on end and the high tree canopy protect them. The main feature of temterate forest in rain and mist.

Okay sounds like maybe I had better regroup that plan and figure out an alternative.
Thanks Cristina
