Maya, Sunset, Snowbank ..Bloom & Leaf Comparisons

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Maya from NHE, Sunset from Plants Delights, and Snowbank from Terra Nova.

Snowbank was supposedly developed from Sunset.
I was told Sunset was really Maya.
Putting here for input and opinions.
Especially, Monika's.
Thanks (o:

The flowers are so close on all 3. Sunset sure looks like Maya. I wish you had P & C to compare also. I think my Maya blooms more peach.

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Kell, my P&C had fuzzy leaves. Does yours?
I near lost P&C several times and finally gave away.

These three have smooth leaves.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I have all three. Will check them closer in the morning.

They all look pretty much the same, difference in bloom color, is only thing I noticed.

Thanks for picture. My Maya has a very slight blue green instead of yellow green as in PC and SB. Maybe the soil or fert. + trace elements in soil make the difference.

Montgomery, AL(Zone 8a)

Barbara, I think you are right. fert. + trace elements + environment causes hidden traits to appear that cause minor and in some cases major differences in size and coloration.

The problem is that Maya has a wide range of color. It goes from cream over yellow to apricot or even golden and can be seen on one and the same plant within one vegetation period.

Alice, Maya and Sunset look much alike, the Maya flower seem to be larger, the flowerstalk longer than of Sunset.
100% ID would bring a crosspollination of several flowers (at least 4- 5 of each).

I will post pictures of my Maya and if possible, of the small PC plant.

My Maya was very dark this summer. Later in the season the color was much paler.

It is really neat to see them side by side like this! I only just received my first and only Maya cutting. After seeing this, I don't feel like I need to have all three.

Alice, Maya showing much color. I made the picture today.
The narrow part of the corolla tube is almost covered.

Snowbank on the left, P&C right. Snowbank has the oval leaves of Maya, P & C the lanceolate like leaves of versicolor.

Stop! Now I think I need Snowbank! LOL

Here's mine - Sunset, Snowbank, Sunset
The Sunset on the left is from a cutting of my sister Julie's plant, I kept the one with the most variegation, and it is definitely more variegated than the Sunset on the right.

It is Beautiful! just love it.

I only have Snowbank of the three under discussion. The foliage on mine is so pretty I could almost grow it just for the foliage. Actually that is all so far that i am growing it for. It has y'd and is about 3 feet tall, but I can't see a sign of a bud. I put it in the greenhouse 10 days or so ago, hoping it might set some buds yet this fall. Donna

rutholive,
how long have you had your snowbank?

Northridge, CA(Zone 10a)

It’s been a while since I checked the progress of this discussion and I'm very gratified by all the activity.

Elsewhere a similar discussion is going on and several members pan Snowbank, complaining of burned edges.

Here the comments are all positive.

I have very young Snowbanks, which I obtained from Terranova, the patent holder. I hope this coming spring and summer they will grow to size and bloom. The foliage IS spectacular, but I'm anxious to see what the trumpets look like. I recently acquired a Sunset, and there are noticeable differences. I would like to obtain a Maya so I can grow all 3 and compare. Oh, and I also have P&C and late this summer it bloomed, and how exciting to see the trumpets emerge white and see them turn a honey color. I especially liked how even the pods were variegated! I hope to be able to have some cuttings of all these variegated varieties for trade (except Snowbank, of course, whose reproduction is prohibited by the patent).

Maya produces one in a while white sprouts without any chlorophyll. They even produce flowers, which are much smaller than a normal Maya flower. The foliage and the flowers of these sprouts must be protected from sun and wind to prevent them from drying.
A Maya leaf may have different colors. The new sprout may be yellow green, older are creamish white with green and greyish-green parts.

I forgot to get back with pics. Here they are.

Badseed, I thought I sent you a Snowbank when I started that Snowbank frenzy last June. You must not have gotten in on it, eh? Mine bloomed, the blossoms were almost white. But, it was in the greenhouse when it bloomed. Yesterday I cut the plants back and de-leafed them to keep the bugs down. Set them back in the corner with the other brugs, so they have company for the winter.

Alice, so sorry! Almost 3 months late, I do not have P & C. I thought I did, I bought it as P & C but Brugie and others convinced me it was really Maya.

Gloria, did you get a new camera for Christmas???

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

No, this is our old Nikon #995. We have been happy with it.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Nikons are really good.
