Firespike-hummers love it
Imzadi, chocolate iris is just what I call them. The flower is an odd brownish purple color that to me looks like milk chocolate. I have no idea where these iris came from as they were here when we bought the house.

I've always wanted a firespike and planned to buy the red one. However, I saw the purple firespike (odontonema callistacyum) at a local nursery and immediately had to have it. :) http://images.google.com/images?q=odontonema+callistachyum&ie=ISO-8859-1&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search

Moretz:
The nursery was having a sale and I paid $7.95 for a 3-gal. plant. Unfortunately that is too large to send through the mail.

moretz - I have been following this thread a bit. I would love to get the eyeball seed also. The Thompson and Morgan is to pricey - I guess it is the awful dollor-pound conversion rate. I have bunches of celosia seed, both comb and flame-shaped; some nice pregnant onion starts; some nice, young, red Christmas cactus started about 6 weeks ago. Probably other things, although most of my garden is young and not quite ready for divsion. Let me know what you think, or what else you are hunting.

Just a brief update. I planted my firespike baby in bright shade with a trace of sun, in May, I lthink. After a slow start, it grew wondergfully. I am sure that it will give me more branches in the future, but the leaves are amazingly large (maybe 6") and beautifully green and veined. The blooms are great, although I did not "catch" a hummer on them. I took a six-pack of cuttings 3 or 4 days ago, and so far they are looking really good. So the experiment continues - leave the plant in the ground (semi-sheltered zone 7b) and grow babies for insurance. I'll keep everybody posted. Hope those of you growing yours are having as good luck as I!
deleted - I duplicated the last entry - oops!
