Over wintering EE's

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

As always I'm caught not ready for frost. I'm kicking myself for not potting up my EE's earlier in the season. They are all in the ground now. How should I handle this? Pot them up? Leave them bare root? The only one I ever over winter I just leave in a bathroom that gets lots of light. I have way to many to do this now. Can they go dormant? I really don't want to fight the bugs on them all winter. Thanks for the help.

Kristi, somewhere I was asking the same question. One answer I got, was to cut back the tuber ones and just store the bulb. On the running one, they said the roots could be stored in moss. I hope that helps. I guess that is what I am doing. Last year I kept the small ones going and it was a pain! LOL I think Brugie said that is what she will do.

I have all of mine potted and ready to carry to the basement. They don't require much help to live through the winter. I was afraid to let them go dormant for fear it would take too long for them to come back in the spring. I don't know what kinds, but Kyle said that some of them will take up to a year or two to come back if they go dormant. Can't have that!!

I think the amazonica/polly were some of the 'don't let it go dormant' ones.

Okay, I give up. What are EE's. Always learning something new. This must be my new thing for the day. LOL

Alocasias & Colocasias. Sigh ~ my latest obsession.

Oh Duh, I should've know that. Sometimes my brain goes dead. Or as my DMIL calls them, a senior moment, although I'm not quite in that category yet my brain seems to be. LOL

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

AngelSong gave me two of these as a gift and I "really" want them to grow next summer beside my water garden. So my question is how do I store them for the winter? In my heated basement? In soil? They came in plastic bags and seem to have a "ball" on the end. They definitely have lots and lots of roots on them. They appear to have been dug up very recently. Should I brush off all the dirt, cut off the growth, and store in a paper bag in the basement? I'm in zone 6 where the winters can get below 0 F and summers can get in the 90's.

Thank you bunches!!

...I went through the same dilemma when I got my first EE's just last month.
There are 2 types....bulb/tuber -or- runner type. So that should easy enough to figure out. If you have a fleshy bulb like root they can be stored as a bulb. Runner type (Imperial Taro ) is what I have and they are sharing a pot near a window for the winter because they can not be stored like a bulb.
....Storing your bulbs dry will of course shorten the growing season for them.
Best of luck with your EE's
