Hi,
I have seeds of dwarf pink banana (Musa velutina) & have tried planting them several different ways with no luck. I have tried to start in vermiculite, potting soil & peat pellets. I only have a couple left & I really need help. Has anyone ever had any luck with banana seeds and could tell me the secret? Thank you so much!
banana seeds
I haven't grown them myself, but I'm told they're like canna seeds. If that's the case, knicking the seed coat and an overnight soak in water should help. It's hard to get moisture through those flint-like seed coats.
Hi Agrinerd,
that is a good idea. I will take my last few seeds and try that. I had not thought to try that yet. I found a website, seedman.com that sells a banana "kit" that has 6 varieties, 10 seeds each so I called my mom & said "have you always wanted to grow bananas??" LOL
She warily asked why & I told her about the kit & that I only wanted the 10 dwarf pinks & she said sure, she would take the other 50 & give them a shot. So now I will have 10 more to try. Yippie! I may just get a banana tree yet.
Thank you!
Soak them in a weak tea overnight after nicking them....tannic acid in the tea helps soften the shell...
.....If they were mine I would try germinating them folded into a damp paper towel in a zip lock baggie method after soaking.
..........Label, Zip & tape the baggie to a nice bright, warm window, but NO direct sun.
...AS soon as you notice a sprout, carefully move it to your starting medium......you could cut off a piece of towel with each seed and plant it that way...in order to not disturb tiny rootlings........
......... I am trying this with some Drac seed at the moment....This is how I check for germination rates on all seed I save..
Good Luck,
SB
