Not Brug, but a beautiful Datura "triple"

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

I planted these in the spring, and have been waiting and waiting to see the blooms, finally sunday afternoon, there it was!!! A beautiful triple purple and white.

Is this the one they call "black currant swirl"??

Thanks much

Very pretty Laurrie. I have several datura plants that are just beginning to bloom well. Some that I have act like the drought stopped the blooms. It's okay because it is about time to clean off the beds anyway. Just hoping that when I start, I'll find mature enough pods on each of the datura plants.

Brugie
I think too the rain had a major effect on all my plants this year, some good, and some not so good, for instance: the Datura's are usually larger plants and bloom earlier than they did this year!!

Do you know if this is the one they call the "Black Currant Swirl"?? I know I have seen them, and I thought they were doubles, didn't know triples existed!! I got several seeds in trades for the Black currant swirl, but they all said the blooms were only doubles, so not sure where these actually came from!!! But very happy to have them, so to whom ever may have traded me for these, THANKS so much, they are wonderful!!!

Yes, it looks like my Datura, "Black Currant". You hit the jackpot!! Sometimes you are rewarded with triple instead of double blooms!!! What a beautiful bloomin' beauty!!!

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Hi Shirley, I am delighted to know that it is supposed to be the Black Currant, I wondered when it looked so different, but thought it almost had to be the same, just a triple. Thanks for the info!!
Have a great week

Laurri

Your pic is beautiful. I love the Black Currant Swirl and have many plants of them. For the most part, mine are almost always a triple flower, occasionally I might have a double. Heck, I even had a quad bloom once. (It was on a plant that I have potted and have had it for 4 years.) It was really cool. I'm on a quest now to find the triple yellow blooming datura. Enjoy.....

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Cool Brinda I would love to see a triple yellow too, have seeds/plants growing supposed to be double golden queen, will wait to see the blooms to know for sure what they are.

Brinda, do yours grow outside, or must you bring them inside for the winters?? I am bringing some of these in this year, most times I just collect seeds and toss plants, but I am going to try my luck at over wintering these beauties inside this year!!

Laurrie

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

All of mine are grown in pots. I bring a couple of the pots in during the winter. They do just fine. You can tell that they're resting during the winter months. I only water about once a month. But occasionally they do bloom indoors during the winter. It's really nice to see that bloom when everything else is dead. The one that I have that is 4 or 5 years old now must be at least 4' tall, not counting the pot. It's happy where it is. And we love them. Best of luck! Enjoy....

Brinda, If you have extra seeds later I'd love to have some, I bought 5 packs off Ebay and they all ended up being LeFluer single lilacs

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

springsong, I will have plenty of seeds. I probably have at least 10 pods ripening right now. But they sure seem to be moving at a snails pace. I really don't ever remember them taking so long to ripen. There are a couple that have been there for about 5 weeks or more. If you will email me and don't mind waiting....I will send you some.

OhioBreezy, That triple purple datura is absolutly gorgeous. Lavender or purple or any shade thereof is my very most favorite color. You made a great shot. Sure hope i can find some seeds of that for next year.

Root your double-triple is a lovely powderpuff. I want that too. Think we already talked about that. Donna

Just picked a few yesterday.

I should also have plenty of seeds from my Datura, "Black Currant". However, I leave the seed pods on the plant until they turn a dark color and then remove the entire pod. Does it matter which way you do it?

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Shirley1md: I leave mine on like you do, until they are mature. They either turn brown or split open, I have noticed some varieties seem to turn a whitish color right before splitting. I don't want to take any chances that the seed are not mature.
Rootdoctor: Are the seeds mature enough when they are picked green.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I also leave mine on the plant until they turn or split. I know that some of the singles can still have viable seed if picked a little green, but I've never tried the doubles.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

No,I picked these like dead heading,I want more blooms,I still have plenty of pods, some big fat ones,I will let these dry and broadcast them at a friends house.

I agree with letting them almost split on the plant, just about the time of frost,I will pull them.It is going to be upper 80s here today.
Poppysue say me a Swirl seed,I love this picture of Laurrie's,I hope she gets a pod!

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

I will be saving all the pods on the plant here, I have never NOT gotten a pod, so lets hope this one does not dissapoint me (or any of you wanting them) I will post here on the seed trade forum and here on this link when seed pods are there and getting ready.

I am tickled to have the triple.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

OhioBreezy

You've had flowers before, right? After the flower a pod should start growing. They get very big. I can't imagine that you've never had a pod if you've had flowers. Your flowers are so pretty.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

where do you all get the seeds or plants for these? I'm not finding much when I do a search for them on aol. I'd like to get some seed for both that are pictured on this thread.

Some one please send me a link!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Please, put me on your list too.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Cats....I will send you some! You have mail.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Sorry Minigrannie, I wasn't ignoring you. David is sending me cuttings and I thought I would send him seeds for his cuttings. If you'd be willing to wait for my seed pods to ripen,I will send you some seeds. Please email me.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

seeds for cuttings is fine with me Brinda.

Debby, How about a swap on some seeds of that triple yellow for brug cuttings?

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

catsmeow: Sure will trade with ya. I too am waiting for the triple yellow pods to ripen. Seems to take forever for them to ripen. I hate this waiting game, we could have frost here within the next month.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

I have seeds for several different types of Daturas, including "Black Currant". Please e-mail me if interested. Very easy to grow from seed.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Let me try another one since the previous one is hard to see.

Shirley, those are pretty, the doubles, I have them growing here now too.

Brinda = What I meant was that I have never NOT gotten seed pods - I always get great amounts of seed pods and have grown these for gosh, probably 6-7 years now, this is the first time for the triple one above though, and I can only assume it will produce as much as all the others i have grown in the past. LOL - sometimes I try to type too fast and what I meant may not have gotten across very well.

Anyway, I will be saving seed, if anyone wants them just drop me a line, I will post here and on the seed trade forum when they are ripe.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Ohio,I would like a couple!

And Shirley,Would like a couple of yours also!

Ohio....it wasn't your typing, it was my reading. Toooo fast! I misunderstood what you wrote.

Root...that is a fabulous picture. They look like they are glowing.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Great picture, Laurrie! I may be the one who accidentally referred to these as a triple purple datura. I found out from MaVieRose that they are actually called black currant swirl. I had sent out seeds labeled as the first, but will know better this year. I have two plants that have done well this year out of 8 that I planted! The rain really made these fickle. One of the two bloomers has some good seed pods so I hope to share more, too ☺ Just love your picture!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow Breezy
That is georgous. I may have to grow some of those too. I think I may have to cutivate a larger garden to be able to grow everything I have seen at DG. LOL

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Brinda, this one is nice, have one pod going,I would love to try to cross it with your Swirl next year Ohio.

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Root: you are on my list to save seeds for, would love to see a cross done!!

I got these seeds from a fella names Scott in SC, he send me tons of all kinds of seeds, and just asked me in return to save seeds and possibly some cuttings of the ones I grew. So I owe him big time, they were wonderful plants so far that I have seen.

Morph: thanks, I wan't sure myself what it was called, I had heard some refer to it as black currant swirl and others called it the double purple and white, so when it opened in triple, I was wondering what I had. Now I know they can be double, triple or even quad!! neat.

Tombstonejan: let me know if you want me to save you seeds!!

Laurrie

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Ohio: I would love some seeds too. I will have to put all my gardens into datura gardens from friends of DG.
