Banana people, have a question...

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

I have a banana bud or bloom or something. First one I have had and would like to know exactly what it is. Not even sure which banana tree it is! See next post for pictures. Thank you!
Connie

HA, ya'll are so funny! Cala, thanks, I am excited. CC, it has taken a few years for me to get one so don't give up. (I hate to see a grown woman cry)

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Congrats, Weeds. I read someplace that it takes 18 months of growth to produce a bloom, at least on the kind of nanas that I have; even if the top dies, if the stalk does not fall over it is still alive. I usually cut mine back about where the poor leafless stalk fell, sometimes about 4 feet, sometimes to the ground. The first frost or freeze makes the nanas look like an atomic bomb hit or something. So sad.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Hey Roz, have you had many blooms? I always cut mine back too, they are an ugly mess about January. I am hoping the ones you gave me will bloom next year...I don't think they will this year.
Gonna put another pic up tonight, I see there have been some activity in the bloom today.

Your tree is beautiful AND you have bananas??!! You lucky girl!

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

That is a mess! Some storm to do that much damage, did you save any of them or have to cut them all off?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Way to go weeds!!

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Thanks lilypon, isn't that something?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

What got me Weeds, this was just rain,9in. in almost 3 days,I know to some here, that is not much, but we were 16 below normal, making the Dustbowl days look like a vacation.Started the year I think at minus 11in.weird weather.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Truly amazing!! :~)

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Hey Floridian, this is a treat for me...I know down your way it is common, but not so much here. How you been?

Root, it's a shame, but you got some much needed rain to make things grow back, yes?

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Sorry about ur bananas! I know how u feel. I feel the same thing when I lived with my Mom's. Every year we get excited to see Banana fruits. Sometime we got lucky, sometime no luck due hurricanes or any storms. Now I have much of bananas trees but no fruits this year! Maybe next year who know..

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Doing a dance to keep the hurricanes away.....

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

2 crutches, 1 cast and 1 good leg...must be quite a dance!
Wish I was there to see it! But even more...I hope it works, keep dancing!
We don't have fruit just a Cavendish tree. Maybe we'll have fruit next year.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Yep, it is funny, me and Captain Hook.

I have some to share with you when you come up here.

Lake Mary, FL(Zone 9b)

congrats WEEDS! i live in Orlando and have six types of bananas growing at back of property to hide unsightly undergrowth in adjacent 'conservation' area. My Williams has produced in the past (not this year), yielding about 40-50 full-sized bananas. The Mahoi's bloom and produce a very meager hand or two (the amount under each leaf) and i currently have a Gran Nain (which Chiquita markets) with a very small bunch growing. it will take 5 months for a bunch to ripen. last season i had one which ripened in Dec/Jan. mine are in serious need of tropical fertilizer - expensive stuff ($100.00 for a 40 lb bag). I also have a red banana about 8' tall - no bananas yet (and it's almost three years old). first armadillos trashed it, then lawn maintenance people got it, followed by freezes two years in a row. don't know what kind of red it is (hope it is not Manzano) - maybe Panama Red or hopefully Philippine Red (a dream!). We (you and I) are probably a bit far north to be able to depend on harvesting many bananas but they are fun and beautiful plants.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Hey defjef,
You have quite a collection of nana trees, got any pictures? I just love the blooms and all, I can buy bananas but not the blooms! Aren't they great fun?
