Jacquie,
So nice to hear from a fellow CA'ian..I was thinking about visiting Amador Farms when I go to Sacremento the 20th of Sept. for the Nor Cal meeting being held there ( with guests the Trimmers and Stamiles ) I don't know if there will be enough blooming at that time. What do you think?
Are you into daylilies too?
My daughter and family live in Scotts Valley, so I know it well.
Thanks for your welcome. Margie

Margie, I really don't think there will be any in bloom by then, mine are through, but it's such a nice nursery that it would still be worth the drive. They have a wonderful gift shop, I like to Christmas shop there.
BTW--- My daughter and her family live in Scotts Valley too. What a small world!
Jacquie
Jacquie,
Wow, small world is right. Where is she from Hwy 17? Wouldn't it be funny if they knew each other.
Thanks for your input on the daylily blossoms that would be open at Amadors and their gift shop. Sounds tempting.
Do you know how far they would be from Sacremento?
Talk to you soon. Margie

Margie, It's about a 45 min. drive from Sac. You would take 16, and thats a very easy drive. It's beautiful country, lots of vinyards and wineries.
My daughter lives near near Whispering Pines Drive, off of Mt. Herman Rd. They may know each other, Shari workes for a dentist in town, Dr. Dominick. We lived there for so many years, I wouldn't be suprised if they know each other. Her children are 9 and 12.
picturelady - im always the last to read these forums and thats why im late to welcome you to daves garden. i seem to learn something new every day. i live in upstate n.y. well, enjoy the website. im sure you will have a great time talking to all of us.
A belated welcome, PictureLady :) So glad you are here!!!
Welcome from a yardener in central Missouri. I do organic as far as possible and still make sure we get the veggies we worked on so hard to raise to harvest stage. We have 9 4'-5' X 26' raised beds framed by concrete blocks and filled with various materials. The first 4 started out with purchased topsoil which was as bad as what we have here on the farm. So we added dozens of bags of shredded leaves, hundreds of pounds of sand, and other organic materials to each one and they are now pretty good soil. We still add organic materials every year. The year we got tons of 3 year old stable cleanings from a neighbor. We also began to get loads of stable/livestock barns on the local State Fair grounds that has been shredded and decomposed for several months. Wonderful mulch and soil additive.
Enough about our yardens. Tell us about yours. What veggies do you raise? Anything exotic? Be sure to share recipes on that forum too.
Leaflady,
Thank you for your letter. Actually I am presently looking for an idea for raised beds without too much labor and expense and your idea of concrete block sounded good to me. We have very heavy clay soil and I experienced what you did....purchased a planting mix and even the weeds wouldn't grow in it !! I too have been adding organic compost when ever I have enought. Now my DH is suffering with arthritis in his hip, so my 'digger' cannot even do that for me now.
Nothing fancy in veggies, mostly snow peas, swiss chard, tomatoes, zucchini and herbs...basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, marjoram, parsley, garlic, chives, tarragon...oh and yes potatoes.
I have had a problem with insufficient NTG and need to fertilize more and I think I may water too much. So I have alot to learn.
The past year I have been infatuated with daylilies and am right now even squeezing my veggies and putting daylilies in their beds. I am obsessed I guess. Fun. Margie
