Where to get ginkgo tree seedling ? Anyone has some to trade or for postage?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

If you don't find any for trade, here are a few commercial sources that carry them:

Grimo Nut: http://gardenwatchdog.com/c/877/
Seedlings: http://gardenwatchdog.com/c/2133/
Evergreen Gardenworks: http://gardenwatchdog.com/c/856/
Forestfarm: http://gardenwatchdog.com/c/25/
Arbor Village: http://gardenwatchdog.com/c/704/

Seedlings are brittle, and being a conifer, damage will ruin the long term shape. A 1g from the nursery will do much better in my opinion. Actually even 4".

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

If you get a seedling you have a 50/50 chance of getting a female tree.

The fruit is very messy, smelly (though not as bad as everyone says) and hard to clean up. Once the tree attains some size the amount of fruit can be overwhelming.

You should be able to find the cultivar 'Autumn Gold' in a local nursery. Ginkgos are slow growing so they tend to be a little on the expensive side, but are well worth the investment.

You can also purchase a Ginkgo through mail order. Forest Farm carries a number of cultivars. Here is a link to their web site: http://www.forestfarm.com

The smaller trees that are sold in their "tube" size run about $20.00 for one of the male cultivars. Forest Farm is in the Garden Watchdog and they have a very good rating. I have ordered from them for years and have been very happy with the nursery stock I have received from them.

And for everything you ever wanted to know about the Ginkgo, but were afraid to ask, there's The Ginkgo Pages. Here is a link: http://www.xs4all.nl/~kwanten/
Good luck,
Mike

Does anyone know where I can get a California fan palm tree. Was just in California and there were no starts to be had.

San Francisco, CA

I had two gingko seedlings and both died. They were bonsai starts, I found at local nurseries. If you look carefully at the bonsai starts, you can find one, (but it probably won't live) and so I bought a larger one that is doing ok.
One seedling died because the cat sat on it. Bigger is better. I paid 30, still that is not so bad.

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

I just transplanted a 4 foot tree from a friend in WV, we did this about 2-3 months ago and it is doing great here in OH. She found it at an old cabin on part of their property (they built a new home further down the mountain) and she said she didn't want the tree, I could take it home. We didn't know what it was at the time, just were fascinated with the leaves. So home it came with me, about a 5 hour drive and I planted it right off when we got home. I am very impressed with it!!

The cheapest way is to drop by an oriental market, and buy ginkgo nuts still in their shells. I got a few started that way in Florida.
