"Super Brug!"

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

This is my 'Snowbank' that struggled to break free of its variegation ..and did.
I don't say 'revert' ..as this brug struggled it's way to green.
Tissue cultured, it was never green to start to revert to.

In it's infancy, it was more green than 'Snowbank'. And different.
More a green leaf with a white scalloped edge.
As the top struggled to break the white, 'Maya' type suckers (but tetraploid) developed along
its trunk while the top lost it's variegation entirely.
This plant is now totally green. A rich deep green.

Right now just over 7' tall this strong structured plant has grown to this perfect form all of its own ..no shaping or pruning.
Blooms are large, beautiful, and wonderfully fragrant. And the leaves a deep rich green and tetraploid 'thick'.
The 'green' is really wonderful. Compare to the other brugs in the background.
You can't miss it. Really stands out from all the others in the greenhouse.

Also, now has one rich deep green pod ..open pollenated. And 2 others just starting with RK the pollen parent.

I am really glad I kept this little reject growing. It has been at the tops in my enjoyment in growing brugs just watching it 'develop'.
A true pleasure each time I see. ((o:

I think we all probably have a favorite brug for one reason or another. This is a good place to point out to people that even tho someone else may not like a brug or may have trouble with it, this doesn't mean that you or I can't love our little favorite and keep it forever if we want to. I'm guilty of composting a lot of brugs for various reasons, but I have one favorite that until it dies, will be in my garden and that is Versi. Orange. Not a big and beautiful specimen, but something that works for me. So, if you like it...........I'm glad you kept it Alice. Sounds like it has been a source of enjoyment for you and will continue to be. It looks nice and I know you like whites, so I'm sure it does fit into your garden theme very well. I have to say that in the thumbnail it looked like it had lavendar blooms, so I couldn't wait to enlarge the picture. Shoot..........just a copyright. LOL!!

LOL Brugie, lavender blooms! Now that would look mighty good against the deep green Alice described!

Sounds like you have a whole new tetraploid plant without all the cost in involved in engineering it. Good for you. I can't wait to see your new hybrids you create with this one! An alley tree line! Actually this is very exciting, Alice!

Brugie, I too thought it had lavender blooms until I enlarged it.
Abutilon, wow, it's really gotten big. Here is an article on sporting/reverting in hostas http://www.shadychoice.org/NewsLetters/2000/Jul2000.pdf just scroll down a bit to see the article. In biology reverting means going back to an ancestral type, but if the genetics have been changed(tetraploid, tissue culture) then it can't revert, but has sported instead.

congrats, that is a good looking brug. self pollinated buds! and RK pods! many congrats to you.

Orange Park, FL(Zone 8b)

I'm with you, I think it's lovely!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I don't think it matters so much what the plant is or where it came from if it brings you joy. I think it is huge and lovely! It is really cool and interesting that it has gone through such a back ground change and turned out to be what it is. Is this the one you thought about naming a few months ago or did you name it?

Plants are always amazing us aren't they? I agree Badseed, if I like a plant, I'm gonna keep it even if everyone else thinks it ugly!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Alice, its a healthy plant and will be a beautiful alley tree.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

So there is no variegation on this one at all? Did you notice it turning when it was a small plant? I have a variegated heliopsis plant that looks like the leaves are starting to turn green. Out of 3 plants, this is the only one doing that. Some of the leaves are half variegated and half green. I imagine it will eventually be all green.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Beautiful Alice. I give up on the varigated brugs. They have all died on me.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Abutilon, I bought Snowbank this summer. I don't know if it was tissue cultured of not, i don't think it was. Stupid me i didn't write down who i bought it from, may be able to find it later. Anyway the variegation is very nice. It is in a 2 gal pot, guess I should try to pot it up. It is about 30" and hasn't y'd yet. if it doesn't soon I won't get to see any blooms this summer. Donna

Donna, even Maya??? though maybe it hates the warmth. I put it in my house last winter and it hated it!
