Slow Datura

Waterford, ON(Zone 6a)

I started datura seeds in the late spring. They're about 6 inches tall now and out in the garden. Can I bring these in before frost and keep them all winter? Does anyone if they are usually slow? ...and if there is anything I can do to speed them up some? If it makes any difference,it's Devil's Trumpet 'Black Currant Swirl'.
Out of curiousity, what is the difference between a brug and a datura?

Thanks!

At some point, Datura and Brugmansia were in the same family and they were later split. For the most part, Datura flowers stand up while Brug flowers hang down. Brug flowers come in color ranges of pink, yellow, peach, orange and white or combinations of these colors, with some of the newer additions being much darker pinks. There are also several doubles getting around. I could be mistaken but there may be a couple of triple Brugs, or maybe that is a sometimes occurence with the 'stuffed' ones that 'drop skirts'. LOL For the most part Datura flowers are white, yellow or purple or any combination there of and are available in singles, doubles and even triples. From my personal experience, I would say Brugs are easier to root than Datura and also easier to keep over winter BUT I only tried Datura once and I think I should have stuck it in a dark closet and forgot about it aside from tiny amounts of water, spread very far apart. You can always save the seeds from the Dat since they are easy to start and bloom rather soon. I realize I have really over simplified here, but it is the shortest way to an answer. Other than Tonny, that is no longer here, I am not sure who else is big on Dats. Maybe you will get some more answers.

Here is a Datura I have been growing for about 8 years that is perennial and a serious self seeder. This one is called 'Evening Fragrance'. See how the flower stands in the air.

This is my only faithful brug. LOL Okay, it is the only one that has bloomed for me so far, but I have not given up. These are good comparison examples.

OK, Badseed, gotta have some of that!!! Any seeds on the horizon? Gorgeous color. Is that the 'Swirl' one you spoke of?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I'll have plenty of seeds for the white one above with the purple edge that smells like a brothel! LOL Seriously, they are very heavily perfumed. Onca's picture is the black currant swirl. I may also have double/triple purple depending on the rest of the season. Hoping my triple yellow were marked right and bloom as well.
Onca, I'm not sure when you started yours, but if you start them earlier, say February, you should have a stately plant with tons of blooms by June or July easily.

Onca,I hope you get some seeds, that one is very pretty! My friend,Brought a Dat in and it bloomed all winter, set seeds, and is still growing,it was a double Purple

Brothel Dat.LOL!

Sorry Badseed, I was reading too fast before racing off to ship eggs or something! Still love the lavender color of the Datura you posted. And the size!

Onca's photo of the 'Black Currant Swirl' doesn't look anything like the flower that was posted on an auction for 'Black Currant Swirl' seeds (last Fall). Hmmm, I may have to take a chance the next time I see it posted on eBay :~)

Gee, I guess even mine looks more lavender here, in real life it's only about 1/8th of an inch around the edge.

Michele, I'd love to have a few seeds of the one in the post started with the word CRUD!! If you have any extras, that is. I think that is a very pretty one. I love all the daturas, but boy, they do take up some room. Thanks!!

Thanks for the information! I went out yestesday and noticed what looks like a 'bud' emerging from the main stem!

Hopefully I will see it flower in the garden before frost.

Okay, now when I bring it in, do I treat it like a regular houseplant, or do I put it in the dark? A lady in a garden centre advised me to put brugs in a cool dark environment with a minimum of water. But this is a datura, would it be different?

Maggie, if my plant does match the pic like it is supposed to, and I do manage to get some seeds, I can send you some.
I know this is a lot of if's!

Thanks, Onca!

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

So the best time to start these seeds from datura is in the spring? (or late winter...)

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I always start mine in the early spring........not sure how the pros here do it though ;)

I have some seed pods on my double purple and triple yellow. When do you remove the pod to get at the seeds? This is my first year but some of the datura plants are a good three feet wide with about 10 - 15 blossoms at one time. Beautiful!

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Padre, it's been my experience that the seed pods turn brownish and start to open up. That's when I harvest my seeds to make sure they are viable (I hope I'm using the right terminology there) LOL

St. Louis, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks flowox. I'll be watching carefully. I planted this year's seedlings too close to each other - but I've learned my lesson. Padre

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Very pretty purple!

Franktown, CO(Zone 5a)

rootdoctor, I would love some seeds of your triple yellow. I have a huge plant of a small flowered one that is light lav/white with a darker throat!! Interested?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I am interested in all Dats.

Waterford, ON(Zone 6a)

Let's cross our fingers all the if's are a yes! And I will send Flowox and Maggiedew if they are. I'll let you know what happens!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Root I too would like some seeds from your triple yellow dat. I haven't grown daturas for several years but would like to try again. Donna

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Brugie, you can definately have seeds of that Dat! It usually makes tons and the bugs don't bother them. LOL Anybody that wants some can E me. I usually have so many I toss them. If anyone wants to throw some of the doubles and triples my way, you can E me about that too. :) My seeds were older and some mislabled. I'm going to mark plants and toss the ones I don't like.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

rootdoctor, just don't forget to save me just a couple seeds of the triple if you have any :)

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I like the different colors on this one, nice green stripes on the side, have to wait till tonight to see if it double or Triple.
