Pardancanda "down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a) Aug 12, 2003

I planted one of the Juniper 'Skyrocket' about 7 years ago. It is now 10 feet tall, but very bare, not the tightly compact juniper foliage as seen in Wayside's catalogue. I really need a tall, very narrow, evergreen accent- any suggestions for a replacement? Thanks, John

There is a tall and very narrow conifer... who's name I have forgotten. The one I saw was about 8' tall and maybe a fiit in diameter. My friend has one and I'll ask him. Stay tuned.

John, I didn't remember his shrub by this name, but the photos look like what I remember. However, it's a columnar boxwood, not a conifer.

darius, thanks, I love it, esp. first one from Yuccado. Have to check them out in Watchdog. I was concerned about hardiness of boxwood here in NJ< but sounds like it would do fine.

A good narrow conifer that will do well in New Jersey is Thuja occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire'. 'Degroot's Spire' has deep green foliage and is about 18" to 24" wide at maturity. It might get to 36", but that's about the limit.

In the picture, the 'Degroot's Spire' is located in front of a large spruce tree that makes it look like it has wide-spreading branches. It is the narrowly columnar plant in the photo.

I bought 2 Buxus Graham Blandy this spring. Planted one on either side of my Frog gate in the new Woodland garden. They were quite spendy , from Greer Garden in OR, $12.95 each, and were only about 16" tall. They are growing and the nice thing about Buxus is that you can shear them to keep to the size you wish. Forgot to mention in the above, that 7 or 8 years ago I bought 2 Skyrocket, to plant in a narrow space in the front of my house. They outgrew the space in 3 years and i removed them. I had also bought 2 others from a different source (1 dollar each, sale) and planted in my windbreak bank. They do not grow here like the catalogs predict, those two on the bank are now at 6 yrs of age about 12 feet tall and 6 or 7 feet wide. Thats okay where they are but sure wouldn't have been good at front of my house. Donna
