Styrax japonicus

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Do any of you grow Styrax japonicus. I planted one I think four years ago in my front border. It is maybe 4 feet tall now, has smallish leaves and has never had any blooms. I have Styrax obassia planted at the edge of my deck. It has fairly large leaves and is a year younger, bloomed last year and this year, and is at least 5 feet tall, does receive some shade from 7 Sons tree. Do you think I may not have Styrax japonicus. Hi Ruth! We've had a Styrax japonicus (Japanese Snowbell) in the ground for over 6 years now, and it's probably not 3 feet high. It bloomed sparsely the first year but I haven't seen a flower on it since. It's in nearly full shade and doesn't get regular water or fertilizer (gee, you think that might have something to do with it? LOL!)

I figure it's just a slow grower and doesn't get enough sun. Maybe one day I'll dig it up and move it.

Ruth:
We have two of them. One of them doesn't bloom as well as the other because of the soil it's in: it's a bit too damp. Other than that, they are quite healthy and are growing vigorously. We planted them as 6' trees 2 summers ago, and now they are probably 8' or so. Around here (Battle Ground WA near Portland) these trees get to be huge!
