Figure the odds that I'd find a brug on the side of the road many miles from my house? First off, how sad is it that I can spot a brug going 35 miles a hour, LOL! I yelled for my husband to "STOP THE CAR!" I jumped out and put it in my trunk. Imagine my surprise to find the writing on the trunk of this poor looking plant is MINE. GRRRRRR- early spring I gave away this tall seedling (in it's second year) to someone who REALLY wanted a brug. I explained how easy they were to take care of. I also explained it would bloom by the end of summer.
I'm guessing from the way the plant was tossed out, it was never cared for. I imagine that is why it didn't bloom for them. It looks horrible.
I'm SO glad I found it. This is one of the mature seedlings that I'd lost when the Township sprayed my garden. Here is a photo of it. It looks 100% better in the picture then it does in real life.

Found a brug in a trash pile! Hard to believe-
I want to promise you right now, the seedlings you gave me are in that 'progress' picture I posted! LOL I do not toss or neglect brugs!!! I cannot believe you saw that while you were whizzing down the road! LOL Good save!
wow! imagine finding your own seedling like that! what are the odds???
I hope it turns out to be something really special and that this person gets to see it:)
What a find! Looks like you should be able to get it to bloom yet this year. A little TLC and it will be good as new, now you know who NOT to give your babies to.
Amazing! And amazing that the brug tosser drove it down a road to do the tossing instead of the garbage can. Maybe it was a brugnapping and the napers tossed it from their get away car.
Great that you found it and rescued it.
Maybe they put it there hoping you would see, have pity and rescue it??
I know Tig, my husband thinks I'm a nut case! Spotting a brug on the side of the road. Actually Kell- it was in front of his house ( I just didn't realise where he lived) The first Monday of every month is 'bulk' trash day in my Township. Anything goes, I found the plant tossed with some other trash. Badseed- I know you wouldn't become a brug killer, LOL.
Makes me a little sad to think I gave him a large standard when I had all types of little cuttings potted up. I wanted him to have a nice plant. Hopefully it will bloom this season.
You should call him and tell him you need the plant back for your cutting of it has bloomed for you and it turns out it is a spectacular flower. You have Jackson and Perkins willing to pay you thousands of dollars for the rights but under the conditon they own all the ones that will have the same bloom.
lol kell Datdog--I need to go garbage sailing with you. Their loss and if you dont send them a picture of it in full bloom and ask how theirs is doing?--well---well umm ---I will lololololololol---post some "got well soon pics" for us? I got a self propelled lawn mower garbage sailing---hubby did about 30 minutes of work on it and it works just fine,--the trash can be a great source of arbor and trellis material* with some imagination*---cutting pots,--I have no shame.... lol
Great idea Kell! I could only imagine his face if I told him that. Plays- I LOVE bulk trash day! I also love the term garbage sailing! Much better then trash picking, LOL. I've gotten some real finds from the trash around here. I'm sad I didn't get to go early this a.m. and cruise the neighborhoods. My husband has my car for the week. He got in a little fender bender and his is getting fixed. Darn the luck!
I tell my kids it is treasure hunting. Why? They have a bad knack for yelling "Mommy, someone is taking our garbage again!". LOL It usually happens when the windows are open, it is dark outside and we have all the lights on inside and can be plainly seen. Gee. Kids.
Oh that is just to funny. Hope it turns out to be a good one.
This story has made my morning. Enjoyed it immensely. Am I too old to start treasure hunting? Have my own stationwagon, can carry lots! Have fun!
I've found (and taken home) many roadside treasurers, but have NEVER FOUND A BRUG!!! I'll keep looking. My daughters have inherited the trait and it seems to be passing on to the grand daughters. (I'm so proud).
This thread has been a hoot. I have never been a dumpster diver or gone garbage sailing, but I sure get a kick out of you all talking about it. If I were a bit younger, I might just do that. Sounds like fun!!
Gloria, your NEVER to old to look for trash. In my township 'bulk trash' is placed on the side of the road. You just drive by and see what looks good. Shirley, you've never been trash picking! Tell me it's not SO! I learned from my Mom and Grandma, LOL.... I think all you ladies need to come to my house for some lessons. Badseed, I tell the kids were looking for treasures when I have them with me.
Sure is nice to be back on the forum. Was taking a break for a bit, some family issues. I sure missed everyone.
Here is Chelsea they have a couple times towards fall when it free garbage removal. It is when everyone will clean out the garages, basements etc and sit it along side the curbs. Would not believe some of the stuff people put along there. It is usually really busy in town on those weekends. Then during the week the city will come along and start hauling it away.
Curbcrawling is a sport not taken lightly here!I put out an old gasmower and we set bets how long it would last,we went to backyard to hit the cooler,by the time we got to the frontporch it was gone!!We all lost!
all joking aside--I once knew a young woman who's husband walked out on her and their two young kids and I guess it takes sometime to get some assistance,-----so to generate some income--* he didnt bother to send any for awhile* she went to rather upscale neighborhoods with her two kids--found all kinds of stuff in and around trash, which she cleaned up and held a yardsale every weekend. She managed to keep her lights on and buy groceries, and things until she could get on her feet. :)She also got loads of toys that were "pre-broke in" for her kids.
I am one of those loonies that go to "antique sales" and actually pay money for what someone else picked up curbside shopping. My husband goes nuts seeing the old junk I buy!
Ha! You should see some of my old "junk" that I bought at antique shops.
This thread reminds me of a long one about all the flea market, yard sale, thrift store addicts we have here.
you've been spying on me woodspirit? lolol
I just read this post and find it great that there are others like me out there who wait for the big-trash-day (as we call it here) to go out there searching for something wonderful. My grandmother is an artist at it, at almost 80 years old she can fix anything and sell it for some extra income for her traveling adventures. I have found many plants being discarded that were in great shape, even in a nice pot. One of those plants was a coconut that had sprouted, now that tree is taller than my house!
I think Olga just topped us all!
Datdog, I read the original post about the township spraying your seedlings, and I felt so sad for you. I'm so glad that you got one of your babies back. It was fate. Linda
I have an artist friend who does this. She has a pick up truck and travels around all the neighbouring cities. All the wooden furniture she finds in the wealthier areas she refinishes or paints with funky motifs and resells them in her store. This is her 4th year with her store and she does really well. Customers also bring in pieces and she custom paints motifs on them to match their decor.
