lilyfan I love the color on your castor plant! It looks black. If you have any extra seeds I'd love to trade your for a couple. Thanks, Kristi
Castor Bean contest?
Me too Sue. Pop a couple in your pocket when you come over. Thanks a bunch!!
Hey Root! I can't judge this contest, I'm in it. I still have to measure mine!
Just making sure you were paying attention!LOL!!!!
I just tried to measure mine and it is about 3 1/2 crutches tall.
Just checked in on your contest. Just love all the pictures. Too much fun. I am going ot have to grow one of those next year as I REALLY want a Ce-ment one!!! Just love the red ones.
Kristi, your leaf is so great. It looks curved. Is it? For what do you use it? I can see making path stones across my DH's lawn which I am plotting to take over.
Thanks everyone. I just measured mine this evening and they are 9 feet tall. These are from Debbie at our plant swap this last spring. I'm going to have to do this again next year. This was my first year growing castors in about 10 years. Why did I wait so long!
llilyfan
Lilyfan: They look fabulous esp. against the white. Only one of mine made it to maturity. Weeds took over one bed I had several in and crowded them out, the drought hindered them too. Next year I am planting a whole row of just the purples, even if I have to get some ground plowed.
If ya know the ole Root, you know I just had to stop and talk to this lady,it is on my way home from work.
I could only get the tape up to 15 ft.and still had a couple ft. of plant,we are going to trade seeds, and I have invited her to join Daves',she said her sister has a yard that is on the home tour,so I told her to tell her about DG also.
Hey Root,
Just harvested my first purple castors today . . . on one pod 127 seeds . . lookin good! Got a lot more to go if the weather holds.
Root, are you obsessed with Cator Beans? Those are some huge specimens.....get that lady online!
TLC: Good going. I sure hope the weather holds too. Got lots of seeds of castors and daturas, waiting for them all to mature.
I did get a few of the Imapala seeds tonight, they are extremely slow.
Root: Way to go. We need some more Castor Bean Growers.
Hey Root, my castor bean is a little over seventeen feet tall now, but it still hasn't began to make any seed still.
Clsyton, thst is huge! Maybe it is using all it's energy for growth.
What the Heck are you guys taking about????See I'm not the only Castor wacko here???
(gotta admit this Gal has some Castors!)
They are just great! I will have these monsters next year!!! YEEEEEEEHA! I just can't wait until next year! I love them!
Brinda,Losta room,Lotsa water,Lotsa plant!
Debby,
What is the name of the green castor with red stems and red veins in the leaves?
They are my favorite next to the all purple ones so I have a lot of that seed drying also.
Boy that seed is easier to collect than the Giant celosia seed (so tiny!).
Root, I just want to know what you said to her when you walked up??? LMBO!
I know! I know!
'Hey baby, nice beans' :)
LOL!I am not shy when it comes to plants!I think she really thought I was nuts when I pulled out the tape measure!
Hey Root: You're problably the talk of her neighborhood by now.LOL.. All kidding aside, you problably made her day.
TLC: I have never found out what the name of the red veined green leaf--red stem variety is. Have searched the internet and all to null.
Thanks Debby
I collect three good seeds off that yesterday.
Alright Donna!!!!!The one on the right may be Ricinus Zanzibarensis,I am so glad you got in here for some fun!if I get some seeds from Kyle Thai I will save you a few.
So great to see you!
SOB! SOB! I should have taken a picture of my Castor Bean tree BEFORE Hurricane Isabel hit the mid-Atlantic last week!! It was easily 10ft tall. Now, it is leaning on it's side, resting on the top of our split rail fence, with the top 1/3rd of the tree totally wilted and looking utterly pathetic!!! SOB!
Oh well, there's always next summer....
Next summer we will have an official contest lol!I lost my big one on the drive when we got 9 in. of rain over a weekend.did you get to save any seeds?
I'll see if the seed pods remained on the tree after being knocked over by Hurricane Isabel. I will definitely save the seeds, if any are remaining! :~)
If not LMK!
Shirley1md,
Looks like I will have seed
Root,
What is Thai?
Debby, maybe you have Royal Thai. It has huge leaves with red veins on the bottom and a very dark trunk. Mine was slower to set seed too. In fact, they may get frosted next week before ready to harvest.
Do you mean Arlene?
Well, I guess you were the first to ask Arlene, and I didn't go back that far. Just caught Debby's post. Sorry about that.
Brugie: It may very well be Royal Thai. I should take a pic. of it before we do get the frost. I did get a few seeds of it, if yours don't come thru, I would have a few for ya.
So I am still wondering what Royal Thai is. . . does anyone have a hyperlink?
Thanks
Arlene, you can see mine when you come down on Tuesday. It is a huge, but very pretty, castor bean.
How late can we keep these plants going - what's the bottom temperature?
Mine are finally hitting the 7 - 8 foot range (pretty good for me - got a late start in May and no extra water or fertilizer - pretty much whatever the sky gave it). My pods are still very soft and immature.
Do these pods really explode when drying?
LOL!!!!!!!I had a load in a shoe box last year, sitting just behind me at puter, could not figure it out,I would here a pop, then something bouncing across floor!yes they do!
