Crazy Morning Glory Question.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Do Morning Glory runners root themselves when they touch the ground? Do they all do this? and if not which ones do? LOL crazy I know but I have a MG that I want to get ID for. I've had tons of MG's before but this one is a little different. It actually makes runners that are anywhere from 8-12' long and everywhere there is a leaf, it has roots! It hasn't bloomed just yet, and I'm wondering if I even want to mess with it anymore. It is actually taking over my flower bed! I'll try and post a pic of it tomorrow.

Mollybee: Could it be the one that I have growing on my fence. It puts out runners and comes back every year. If it is, you'll want to keep it, it's a beauty. See thread:

This one had to be brought in for my zone. But the way you explained it on your thread it does sound like the same kind. Just wondering why mine hasn't bloomed. It is such a hugh and healthy plant, but no signs of buds or blooms anywhere on the plant! I just hate to think I have to bring this monster in for the winter!! no greenhouse here!!

Mollybee: I can't imagine why it hasn't bloomed. There is one possibility. Mine covers the fence along the side and the front of the yard. The side fence only gets about 4 to 5 hours sun and the front fence gets full sun. The area that gets full sun is covered with blooms daily. The area in partial sun gets only a very few blooms until very late in the season, the middle of August or so. I would not try to bring it in in the winter. If it is like mine it is easily started from runners. I have started new plants by rooting pieces of the runners that have small roots or a piece of the tendrils that it puts out at the top.

I actually just moved mine yesterday(which it was in a pot so it wasn't too hard to do) but before I moved it, it was getting full sun just about all day long. Up until around 4:00pm that is. I put it where it would get even more sun than this, at least another 2 hours worth. Wonder if its rootbound? I have it in a fairly med size pot. I think I will just try and take a cutting or 2 for winter, not even going to try to bring the whole thing inside!

Molly, you probably do need to repot it. My Blue Dawn is in a large pot and the plant itself doesn't look great (not getting as much sun as it would like) but it's flowering away in half-shade. Mine dies back like wisteria but doesn't die off. I'd never rooted cuttings before last year - and I rooted several of the trimmings from its monthly 'haircut' - all but one survived.

I regularly cut off the ivy-leaved runners that come from the bottom of the plant, leaving the heart-shaped leaves and flowering vines to thrive.

This plant is specifically identified by its flowering clusters - often 3 or 5 in a bunch, by the way. That and the runners. ;o) Ipomoea Indica, Ipomoea Acuminata, or Ipomoea Learii, Ipomoea Congesta = same plant, Blue Dawn or Ocean Blue Morning Glory. It's a true perennial as opposed to a reseeding annual - at least in mild and tropial climates.

These pics are from this summer. This is my favorite MG. Even though my gf won't let me put it in the ground.

Went out a few minutes ago and it seems the MG doesn't like the new place. It is all wilted!! I didn't uproot it at all, I simply moved the pot it was in to another place. Hope it perks up in the a/m. I was hoping to get a pic of it.
