Help the squirrels are killing my Mimosa Tree

Does anybody have any thought how to keep the squirrels from chewing the bark off and drinking the sap from my mimosa tree. The leaves are turning yellow and falling off the limbs. It look like they are going to kill the tree. Has this ever happen to anybody else? I don't really want to harm them if I don't have to.
