Tent Catapillers

Allen Park, MI(Zone 6a)

My sister called last night and told me she has a tree being invaded by tent catapillers.
Any suggestions its a fairly tall tree 30' +

I have never expereinced this problem myself.

I was just reading about them in some of the OSU and MSU Extensions' websites (hey, gotta give equal time to these rival schools, LOL). They suggest manually removing them, which in your sister's case is a rather ridiculous proposition, isn't it? Their second suggestion is to spray with BT, but the webbing protects them from the application. It sounds like she may want to get a professional to come to her home to do this.

By the way, how are you doing? Pulled some weeds today and thought of you! :o)

Paul I posted a thread on this same subject on Garden Talk called it web caterpillars. Do a search from the menu and you will find it :-)

I had a Thundercloud Plum tree that got these every year. They always arrived the second week of June or July....I forget now which. We would get a ladder out and with a long tree trimmer with the pole extension cut out the branch the tent was on. If you wait till evening the bugs go back in the tent. We would then drop it inside a plastic garbage bag and I'd pour gas in there and tie it up and put it in a metal can with a lid till garbage day. We then had to spray the tree with Sevin I think it was. DH would climb on the roof of the house with the special spray head and douse the tree good. That always took care of the problem for us. We would repeat this about ten days later. It's much easier to get rid of them if you act fast....like the day you first see the tent.

Good luck to your sister.
