A new member posted a question on the Welcome Mat forum about having a boxwood hedge that is 25 years old, healthy but no leaves down low. How could the hedge be reduced without leaving a hedge of sticks? I thought maybe if it was reduced in height a foot per year it might get leaves on the stems where there are none now. Does anybody know if that would work? Is there another way to do it?
How to reduce the height of a hedge???
The reason the lower branches have no leaves is because when you prune a hedge straight sided up and down the lower branches get hardly any sun. Most public gardens I've visted angle the sides in so the hedge is wider at the bottom and narrower at the top. I would try doing that but gradually over a 2 or 3 year period to give the bottom time to fill out a little. Hope this makes sense.
