Japanese Maples-Success Stories?

Avis, PA(Zone 6a)

Has anyone had especially good success mail ordering Japanese Maples? If so, who did you order from? I have my eye on a couple of varieties but they are so expensive I don't want to waste my money ordering from a bad source.

I have ordered from a number of different mail order sources. World Plants is the first place I ordered from and I was very pleased with what they sent for the price (1 yr grafts for $15 for a lot of different varieties). Unfortunately, they have had problems with their supplier and don't offer much right now. I have also ordered from ForestFarm and was pleased with what I got.

Be advised that they are initially very finicky plants. I ordered about 20 cultivars from World Plants and they all made it through the first year. I have since had half of them die this year, which just about breaks my heart. Some never put out leaves, some put out leaves and then died, and some are sprouting leaves only from the grafting stock. I think it is because we have had such a wet spring, but I don't really know. I have also had about half of the ones I ordered from Forest Farms this spring subsequently die. I guess I'll just try again in the fall. They are my favorite plant.

I've been buying Japanese Maples off and on for years now. Trying to save money by ordering *dead sticks* from mailorder places. Several years ago I found one on sale,,end of season thing, for $35. Today it is a beautiful tree. I'd say,,bite the bullet and buy one with an established root system. A one gallon container is better than bareroot,,when it comes to these slow growers.

Here's the tree today...well worth the money!
