want to do one together??

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

WOW, thanks for that link. I didn't pinch off any ends of mine, just trimmed from the trunk outward and I did more snipping than pinching. Better wait to spend $ on another till I see how this first one fares!

well, I totally messed mine up. I got inside and had a nice cascade, but no inner branches. I have a trunk and I'm going to wire it, hopefully one day it might be something to work with. SIL is bringing me home one like he did and I'm going to try again. :(

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

What a trunk and not a single branch? Can you post a pic I'd like to see what you mean?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

there are two branches besides the 'trunk', but they are soooooooo ugly the way they are. I'm hoping with wire, I can save this one.
okay, it's not fair for me to not post. is it?? no, probably not.
I can take failure, I just don't like putting it out in front of everyone. I'll be right back with a picture.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Cool, didn't want to see it to be critical, just curious how you ended up with one without some branching?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

oh I know you'd never be critical, but we are working together, so suggestions are always welcome. I'm wondering if I could study more pictures and perhaps make this windswept style? needs a lot of wire obviously.

Hey, I think it looks good. Mine isn't exactly what I wanted it to look like, but will know better next time I look for one. Perhaps a wire for the middle branch to bring it up a bit and over away from the lower branch.
If you look closely at my finished one, I have a metal stake in the back that is gently pushing one limb so it covers some of the trunk!

Finally got a pot - hope I didn't trim toooo much root and killed it! We'll see.

nice pot haighr! I want to get a short needle one next and do it (SIL didn't bring one home). I've also got a jacaranda that I want to keep small, it's got a beautiful shape.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Can't wait to see the jacaranda. Think this pot is too small as I had to cut a large amount of root from the plant. Hope it does okay as it looks nice by the fountain and I don't want to start all over LOL!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I cut my rootball over half, not much over. It's doing good, although I still don't like the look:) need to buy some wire and hope I can shape it to something decent.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I'm sure you can make it perfect to your taste, although, I still think it looks good. Some of my rootball is above the pot, not good, but hope it makes it!

Ok guys, I can't seem to find any juniper here and if I do they are so small I would not be able to do anything with them. I'll just keep looking and watching how yours come along.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Anyone else ever get started? Mine is doing quite well considering all the root I cut off.

My husband and I joined a Bonsai club in our city about the same time ya'll started your bonsai group. We were given two different types of junipers. Don't remember the names, I'll find out and let you know. That first meeting we were told to take the plant out of the nursery planter and cut back the roots to half the size and place back in container. We were then told to trim off everything that did not look like a Bonsai. They said you have to study each tree for a long time to figure out which direction you need to go. We meet twice a month and bring our plants to be critiqued. We have now wired them and they still reside in their nursery pots that have been cut shorter. They did not recommend putting them in permanent pots until they were more mature. All we do now is water and watch them carefully. If I can figure out how to take a picture and post it I will try. Good luck to all and don't give up too soon.
