want to do one together??

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

anyone interesting in getting a 3 gallon juniper and doing them together?? or doing them and showing them together?

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I'll see if I can find one at my nursery. About how big to begin with? LOL I know 3gal. container, but what size plant?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

SIL says 8-10" tall and 6-10" overhang off the pot. And look for one that wasn't recently potted up.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I'll try to get over to the garden center on Tuesday as the kids are coming for Memorial Day and we are heading to the cottage. Now, this is gonna shape into a bonsai that stays outside year round?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I'm going to look around this weekend. Look at the plants in the back that they don't think will sell. Yes, this one would stay outside. I'll take pictures of DD and SIL's and post.

here is hers (her first)

btw, Walmart has some great tiny pruners, they market them for houseplants I believe, but they work great.

Great job and so I need a pot also? Should we put them in deep and prune or put in shallow pot?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

well, they did these over a month ago from a one gallon plant and did both. this is about a 6" pot and they are looking great. here is some good info on initial pruning

TiG, I will go to nearest local nursery and see if I can find a good juniper prospect to bonsai with the rest of you. I have one that I did several years ago will try to post a picture of it.

TiG I have been trying to find out the process to pay the $15.00 for my daughter to become a member of DG. I asked Dave through Daves Garden, but no answer. Not the right place i guess and i know he is very busy right now. Donna

Now tiG, got one last evening a Blue Star Juniper here it is.

Here's another angle, will this one work do you think?

that's stunning! it has short 'leaves' right?? now take a few days to study it, the structure and see if you can see where the bonsai is before you cut.

ruth! glad you're with us. You can do it, pick a user name for her first. It won't let you do it without that first. let me know if you keep having trouble, I'll find out exact steps.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I will study it, will be out of town a few days and may think about it while gone. Do you have yours yet and ruth glad you are with us also. Can't wait to see what we all do!
Thanks for the info tiG and helping Ruth, I knew it was easier than I told her LOL!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I'm going to the nursery tonight or tomorrow morning. I hope I find a good one.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the help on getting my daughter started with DG. It will take a while since this is a big weekend. I will get her to decide what name she would like.

I bought a 1-gal. Tam Juniper this morning at our very new Super Walmart. They did not have any larger ones. But it has pretty good bones for a bonsai, just smaller. Donna

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

that might be all I can find, but look how pretty the ones above are and they are one gallons.
Donna, can't wait to meet your daughter.

Tampa, FL(Zone 9b)

tiG you are such a bad influence! I'm going to look for one also this weekend and join you guys. This will make it fun!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

hehehe!! cool

Tampa, FL(Zone 9b)

I put a posting up for jade if anyone wants to do that also, I only have 4, but they are 10 to 15 inch tall.

you're looking good there! unfortunately I didn't get mine. We went today, but the pregnant girl couldn't take another minute after getting groceries.
what does it look like from the front? did you pick a front yet?

Tampa, FL(Zone 9b)

Looks good haighr! I haven't got mine yet either. I will get it tomorrow since I will be off work.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I'm going back out Thursday it's on the list!! LOL!!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Hope you guys get one soon. I stopped snipping mine a bit, but it is starting to take shape.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

if you're like me, better to put the snippers down and just sit and study for a while! LOL!!
I promise I'm getting mine tomorrow. Actually with trying to get ready for PJ's swap, I need something calming to do. Sitting and studying is good. I might even take a few snips before Saturday just for fun:)

Tampa, FL(Zone 9b)

I get to snippen and I can't stop!!!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Well have you gotten yours yet? Here is one I think finished!

Does it look okay?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

haighr, it's beautiful. You did a great job. but I think they say they are never finished:) LOL!! Now to study the wiring thing and perfect the branches. maybe in 5 years, we'll be close:)
I did finally get mine! with the GA swap and all, I just couldn't get around to anything. I got a nice one today, looks like yours I believe. I didn't have a huge selection, I hope mine has as nice a trunk/branch system as yours. I'm going to relax tomorrow with the snippers. I'm going to be disappointed if it's ugly inside, everyone was in such a hurry!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I do have one branch wired. I am wondering now about planting it. Was thinking of getting a pot about half as high as the one it is in and cut half the roots off the bottom and put in shallower dish. What do you think.
What kind did uou get tiG. LOL, in a hurry, if I don't act on things as soon as I think of them, I never seem to get around to them LOL!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I think your idea of not going in too small a pot is a good one! sounds right to me, but hey without a guide, we're flying almost solo, aren't we??? That's about what I was thinking of putting mine in, a pot about half size.
I have two trades to box up and get out of here, then I'm getting on mine. Tag is outside, it's blue something :)

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Blue star? That is what I got. Do you think cutting half the root system off will be okay? If it works, will get a few more as this one looks great in front of the fountain. Kind of gives it that oriental look.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I know that Andy cut his roots way more than half (risky to me but..) and they are doing great. I think half is good and then next year we can pot them smaller.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Okay - will look for a pot this weekend, something exotic LOL!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

mine is a Blue Star and I've got it opened up but fear drove me inside. Need to take a break, look at pictures, then go back:)

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

LOL - then we have the same, the blue stars are pretty. I just did a few on one limb at a time and then got away from it for a while. Fraid I'd get trimming happy and end up with just a trunk and no limbs LOL!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I was just reading one site and it said to repot first. So when I go back out, that's what I'm going to do. it might change the angle of the trunk to be more pleasing. I think maybe the Blue Star needles are a bit long, I wonder if they will shorten over time or if we will always have to give hair cuts?
having a blast though, I'd forgotten how much I like this.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

whew, glad I read this before I went back out http://www.bonsaiprimer.com/pruning/conifer/conifer.html

can't take out all the growing tips, it will cause it to die. So I will be very careful and hope I'm doing it right.
