Welcome Mat Forum?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

There are so many new people signing on each day - cool! How about a forum dedicated to letting them say hello and introduce themselves? Their greetings have been buried in forums not everyone sees...How about a welcome mat forum, maybe always listed first so people are sure to see it right away?

What do you all think?

Hello, gardenwife, I think that's a great idea. My daughter joined last night, a teenager mad mad on flowers and plants. She went into the chatroom because she was often here when I did. I feel she'll be pretty safe there though I wouldn't be happy about chatrooms 'outside'! It's giving her lots of confidence to talk with all age groups too.

i think this is a great idea too - i saw a bunch of newbies posting and thought that id like to welcome them to our "garden family"

Hey, Dave... I agree! Have talked to several newcomers lately in chat, and some seem to feel a bit intimidated. This way, we could welcome them personally, and they'd assimilate more quickly. (But not into The Borg!)

Yeah I like the idea. We've always kind of done welcomes in the General Discussion area, but newbies don't know that when they first arrive.

This way, when a member makes their first visit to the site after signing up, I can give them a cheerful note telling them to step into the Welcome Center for a howdy-do!

I'll set this up soon.

Hello everyone at DG!!! Today is my first day posting here, when I found this site and started reading the different forums I was just so excited to be a part of this great place. I've been through my local MG program and loved it. This seems to me to be the true meaning of "extention". Everyone I've spoken with already has been so friendly and welcoming, it's just great. I can't wait to gather and share new information with the rest of you. Finding this site reminds of the day my five year old lilac finally bloomed,
I was so happy I cried!!!!!
Happy Digging,

Welcome to DG, bjt72! (Another lilac lover, yeah!!! That happens to be one of my top 10 all-time favorite plants; I just need to figure out how to grow them here in the South.) I think you'll enjoy gardening here - it's a wonderful place filled with lots of great gardeners - glad you found us!!!!

hi BJT,
welcome to dave's. i just love it here. i'm new to gardening. i'm learning so much via the www. but all those articles don't give you the "inside"scoop. all the info that you only acquire from hands on experience. my fellow gardeners here at dave's are willing to take the time and teach me. answering my questions no matter how simple. i am so grateful to this site and i hope my 2nd year of gardening proves to be as joyous as my first. :-)

what is involved in becoming a master gardener?

welcome.......nice to meet you. debi z

Thanks debi_z,
I first heard about our MG program at th local library, and from there I was able to contact the extension hot-line, they sent me the info. The program here involves one class a week for 15 weeks, the class is all day, with weekly tests, and final exam at the end. You are also required to volunteers 120 hours, this includes extra classes, working at public gardens, answering the exension hot-line, planning/designing your own public garden, working with local 4-h or scout groups, the possiblities are endless.
When everyone completes the volunteer hours, we a had great banquet and received our MG certificates. It's great program for anyone who loves to garden. I'm sure you would enjoy the program as much as I did.
